DE PERE, Wis. (csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica men's hockey team scored two goals early in the third to tie the game, but No. 7 St. Norbert College would add the game-winner with less than three minutes left in regulation to defeat the Saints 4-3 on Saturday and salvage a split.
St. Norbert opened the scoring about halfway through the first with a goal from Cullen Bradshaw and scored again before the Saints answered. Marian Fiala had the second goal on the power play with 30 seconds remaining in the opening period.
The Saints started off the scoring in the second period about 10 minutes in with a goal from
Luke Simpson (Canmore, Alberta/Athol Murray College of Notre Dame (Canmore-AJHL) ) and was assisted by
Derek Sutliffe (Las Vegas, Nev./Odyssey Charter School (Langley Rivermen-BCHL) ) and
Brandon Millin (Port Moody, British Columbia/Heritage Woods HS (Notre Dame Hounds-SJHL) ). Erik Cooper scored a short-handed goal for the Green Knights with less than five minutes on the clock in the second period setting the score at 3-1.
CSS scored early in the third with
Justin Krabben (Rocky Mountain House, Alberta/Hunting Hills HS (Canmore-AJHL) ) putting the puck in the net that time and was assisted by teammate
Josh Hansen (Chilliwack, British Columbia/Unity Christian School (Chilliwack-BCHL) ).
Dave Williams (Okotoks, Alberta/Athol Murray College of Notre Dame (Waywayseecappo-MJHL) ) scored four minutes later to tie the game 3-3.
Rich Coyne (Cave Creek, Ariz./Pinnacle HS (Alaska-Fairbanks) ) and Simpson were awarded the assists. However, Cooper added his second of the game with 2:39 left in regulation to give the Green Knights a 4-3 victory and snapping a four-game losing streak.
Tyler Bruggeman (North Mankato, Minn./Mankato West HS (Austin-NAHL) ) had 33 saves for the Saints and Tony Kujava stopped 15 shots against the Saints.
The Green Knights improved their record to 15-5-2 overall and 11-4-1 in conference play. The Saints record falls to 11-9-3 overall and 8-6-2.
The Saints will face Marian University (Wis.) to close out conference and regular season play next weekend with games times set for Friday at 7 p.m. and Saturday at 4 p.m..
