PREVIEW: Women's Basketball to Conclude Regular Season

DULUTH, Minn. (csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica women's basketball team will wrap up its regular season this weekend at the Reif Gymnasium as it hosts Bethany Lutheran College on Friday and Martin Luther College on Saturday.

The Saints extended their winning streak to six this past weekend with road wins over North Central University and the University of Northwestern … The Northwestern proved to be the biggest win and kept the Saints within arm's reach of a home UMAC Tournament game.
 
Where They Stand: With two games remaining, the Saints sit in third place, two games behind first place University of Minnesota Morris, a game behind second place Northwestern and two games ahead of fourth place Martin Luther … If the Saints win out and Morris defeats Northwestern on Friday, the Saints will host a UMAC Tournament semifinal next Wednesday as a No. 2 seed … On the other hand, if CSS loses both games this weekend and Martin Luther goes 2-0, the Saints would fall to the No. 4 seed.
 
Seniors: The Saints will recognize four seniors on Saturday … Mariah Hovick (Prior Lake, Minn./Prior Lake HS) has recorded 1,157 points, 517 rebounds, 281 assists and 200 steals in 103 career games … She has started every game in her four-year career and has played over 3,100 minutes … Elena Huber (Northfield, Minn./Northfield HS) has also played in every game of her career … She is only the sixth Saints to record over 100 made 3-point field goals on her career (113) … Sammy Doucette (Colfax, Wis./Colfax HS (UW-River Falls)) has appeared in 92 games in her career and has already hit a career-high with 66 assists this season … Emily Glomski (Ras Tanura, Saudi Arabia/Dhahran HS) has seen her playing time climb every season and has appeared in 17 games and 111 minutes this season.
 
Sorenson-Giffrow on Fire: Junior guard Kelsey Sorenson-Giffrow (Braham, Minn./Braham HS (Minn. Duluth)) averaged 18.5 points per game in both victories last weekend … She has scored in double-figures in four her last five games … Sorenson-Giffrow was 9-for-12 from beyond the arc in the two wins last weekend … She has also made 20 straight from the free throw line … In league game, she leads the UMAC in 3-point field goal percentage (.468) and free throw percentage (.912).
 
Making the Freebies: CSS is 10th in NCAA Division III from the free throw line, shooting 76 percent … The Saints have made at least 12 free throws in the last six games.
 
Outside Game: The Saints made a combined 17 3-point field goals last weekend … That is the most in back-to-back games all season.

The Vikings enter the weekend, winners of two of their last three games … Bethany can secure a postseason spot with a pair of wins this weekend and a Martin Luther loss to St. Scholastica … The Vikings do a good job getting to the foul line as they lead the conference with free throws made (14.5) and free throws attempted (22.1) per game … They also lead the UMAC in offensive rebounds per game (16.2) … Freshman guard Angela DeBruzzi leads the team with 12.4 points per game … Sophomore guard Briana Brandts is averaging 11.3 points per game … Brandts is second in the conference with 9.8 rebounds and 2.3 steals per game.

Martin Luther ended a two-game skid with a 76-52 victory over Crown on Saturday … The Knights have lost to Minnesota Morris and Northwestern twice, but also have a loss to Bethany Lutheran … The Knights can climb to the No. 3 seed with a pair of wins this weekend and a St. Scholastica loss to Bethany Lutheran on Friday … Martin Luther had its second-best shooting performance of the season in Saturday's win at Crown, shooting 45 percent from the floor … Freshman guard Grace Schultz leads the team in scoring at 11.5 points per game … Sophomore forward Mariah Schoof averages 10.8 points.
