PREVIEW: Women's Basketball Has Final Road Tests Ahead

DULUTH, Minn. (csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica women's basketball team will travel to the Twin Cities this weekend to face North Central University on Friday and the University of Northwestern on Saturday.

The Saints had a big 3-0 week last week with wins over Northland College, conference leader University of Minnesota Morris and Crown College.
 
Where They Stand: The Saints are in third, two games out of first place, which is shared by Minnesota Morris and Northwestern … CSS are only up a game over fourth place Martin Luther College and two games up on fifth place Bethany Lutheran College.
 
Hovick Rolling: Senior guard Mariah Hovick (Prior Lake, Minn./Prior Lake HS) saw her string of games scoring in double-figures end at 12 games after playing only 14 minutes vs. Northland last Tuesday … That is the longest streak since the 2009-10 season when Kirsten Haukom reached double-figures in 12 straight games … On Friday, she became only be the fourth player in program history to record 1,100 points and 500 rebounds in a career.
 
Making the Freebies: CSS is 10th in NCAA Division III from the free throw line, shooting 76 percent … The Saints have made at least 15 free throws in the last four games.
 
Inside Game: Freshmen Jenna Langer (Long Prairie, Minn./Long Prairie-Grey Eagle HS) and Holly VanKempen (Elbow Lake, Minn./West Central HS) totaled 53 points in the three games last week … Langer had 11 points vs. Northland, while VanKempen had 15 points vs. Minnesota Morris … Langer matched a season-high with 12 points vs. Crown on Saturday.
 
Fewest Points Allowed in a Half: The Saints only allowed six points in the first half against Crown … That is the fewest points allowed in a half in program history … The previous record was seven vs. North Central in 2004.

North Central's lone conference win came in the UMAC opener at Northland … The only victory since then was a non-conference win over Crossroads College … The Rams like to jack up the 3-point attempts as they are second in the league with 20 per game … They are third in the conference with 5.3 3-pointers made per game … Junior Jamie High leads the team in scoring and is second in the UMAC, averaging 15.7 points per game … Freshman Lizzy Swanson is second on the team at 12.8 per game … High also leads the conference in rebounding at 11.7 per game.
 
University of Northwestern Eagles
Record: 13-8, 9-1 UMAC
 
Northwestern's only blemish on the conference schedule was a 15-point loss at Minnesota Morris at the end of January … The Eagles had to escape Bethany Lutheran on Friday, getting a Chanel Madson 3-pointer in the final 30 seconds to rally past the Vikings 58-57 … The Eagles were down nine with under five minutes to play in that game … Northwestern has shot under 40 percent from the floor in three of its last four games … Northwestern also likes to launch 3-pointers as it leads the conference in 3-pointers made per game at 7.5 and attempts (22.2) … The Eagles are the best rebounding team with 44.1 per game … They also lead in points per game allowed (60.1) and blocked shots (5.7) … Madson leads the team in scoring, averaging 14.2 per game … Jacki Smith leads the UMAC and is fifth in NCAA Division III at four blocks per game … Kim Campbell is also on top of the league with three assists per game.
