DULUTH, Minn. (csssaints.com) – The No. 11 St. Scholastica men's hockey team defeated Marian University (Wis.) by a final score of 2-1 on Saturday at Mars Lakeview Arena in a game where it was held scoreless for the first two and a half periods.

First Period
The Saints came storming out of the gate, totaling over a dozen shots in the game's first 10 minutes with several minutes on the man advantage following chippy play.

Unfortunately for CSS, an odd-man rush for Marian at the 11:11 mark in the first period resulted in their first goal of the game. The goal was scored when the initial rush was stopped by the Saints defense, but the Sabres regained the puck behind the goal line and shot it off the backside of Saints goaltender Corey Koop (Squamish, British Columbia/Howe Sound Secondary (UW-Stout)) with the puck trickling in the net before any Saints player could stop it.

At the horn to end the first period CSS found themselves outshooting Marian 16-4, but on the wrong side of the scoreboard at 1-0.

Second Period
The second period of the game did not see much action as both teams played stellar defense throughout.

CSS did have a few chances on the power play, but were unable to capitalize as the second period ended the same as the first with the Saints down 1-0.

Third Period
CSS began the third period with a sense of urgency rattling off four quick shots to start the period. Unfortunately for the Saints, they were again unable to put the puck in the net as each shot was sent away by the Marian goaltender.

The Saints finally broke through in the third period when Joel Paiement (Okotoks, Alberta/Holy Trinity Academy (Calgary Canucks-AJHL) ) put the puck home off a rebound for the game-tying power play goal with 9:03 to go in the game. Dylan Nowakowski (Calgary, Alberta/Centennial HS (Brooks-AJHL) ) and Keegan Bruce (Bellingham, Wash./Bellingham HS (Weyburn-SJHL) ) were credited with the assists.

Both teams played even the rest of the way, which meant that overtime would be necessary to determine the winner.

Overtime
It did not take too long for CSS to score the game-winning goal in overtime. Brandon Millin (Port Moody, British Columbia/Heritage Woods HS (Notre Dame Hounds-SJHL) ) won the opening faceoff for the Saints, and just 16 seconds later Millin took a pass from Steven Phee (Balzac, Alberta/George McDougall HS (Canmore-AJHL) ) and buried the puck home for the Saints as they escaped Marian in overtime to earn a weekend series split at Mars Lakeview Arena. Nowakowski also earned an assist on the game winner. He finished with eight total shots with the two assists, while Koop ended the night with 16 saves on 17 total shots to earn his first victory of the season.
