DULUTH, Minn. (csssaints.com) -- The No. 11-ranked St. Scholastica men's hockey team lost the first of a two-game Northern Collegiate Hockey Association (NCHA) series to Marian University (Wis.) Friday by a score of 4-1 at Mars Lakeview Arena.
With Friday's loss CSS moves to 4-2-1 on the season, 3-2 in the conference, while Marian (5-3-3, 3-2-0 NCHA) improved its winning streak to three. This marks the third ranked team the Sabres have beaten already this season.
The ActionThe Sabres got off to a quick start, scoring two goals within the first five minutes. St. Scholastica answered back when
Hunter Bergerson (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East HS (Minot-NAHL) ) scored midway through the period, the goal assisted by
Josh Hansen (Chilliwack, British Columbia/Unity Christian School (Chilliwack-BCHL) ) and
Justin Krabben (Rocky Mountain House, Alberta/Hunting Hills HS (Canmore-AJHL) ). The goal was Bergerson's second of the season.
Marian Pulls AwayBefore the first period ended, however, Marian put away their third goal of the game when a breakdown in the Saints offensive end led to a short-handed goal for Scott Milnthorp with under two minutes left to play in the period.
It was a slow start for St. Scholastica, managing only seven shots, and the team was never able to get things rolling throughout the night. During the final two periods CSS put 14 shots on net and failed to score on three power play opportunities. The Saints also let up the final goal of the night early in the second to go down by three.
GoaltendingTyler Bruggeman (North Mankato, Minn./Mankato West HS (Austin-NAHL) ) started in net for St. Scholastica, saving only six shots and allowing four goals before he was pulled in the second period and replaced by
Corey Koop (Squamish, British Columbia/Howe Sound Secondary (UW-Stout)) who didn't allow a goal the rest of the game.
