Game Recap: Men's Hockey |

Men's Hockey Uses Third Period Rally to Get Past Northland

Notables
-Bruggeman finishes with a career-high 49 saves
-CSS killed a 5-minute 5-on-3 Northland power-play in the second period
-Third straight game Millin has recorded a goal

DULUTH, Minn. (csssaints.com) – The No. 15 St. Scholastica men's hockey team scored three times in the first eight minutes of the third period to erase a 2-1 deficit and defeat Northland College 4-2 on Friday night at Mars Lakeview Arena.

Third Period
Northland scored a pair of first period goals and jumped out to a 2-0 lead. Michael Spring (Kelowna, British Columbia/Okanagan Mission (Chilliwack-BCHL) ) cut the lead in the half with his third goal of the season to make it 2-1 at the first intermission. The second period saw no scoring, but was not without a key part of the storyline as we will get to later.

The Saints came out of the second intermission aggressive and tied the game up at 2-2 one minute and 22 seconds into the period when Derek Sutliffe (Las Vegas, Nev./Odyssey Charter School (Langley Rivermen-BCHL) ) hit Kale Derkson (Regina, Saskatchewan/Sheldon Williams Collegiate/Athol Murray College of Notre Dame (Notre Dame-SJHL)) with a centering pass and Derkson buried it home. Cole Golka (Ardrossan, Alberta/Athol Murray College of Notre Dame (Dryden Ice Dogs-SIJHL)) was also credited with an assist.

Just 43 seconds later, Josh Hansen (Chilliwack, British Columbia/Unity Christian School (Chilliwack-BCHL) ) gave the Saints the lead with assists from Joel Paiement (Okotoks, Alberta/Holy Trinity Academy (Calgary Canucks-AJHL) ) and Connor Faupel (Rochester, Minn./Rochester Century HS (UW-Superior)). Brandon Millin (Port Moody, British Columbia/Heritage Woods HS (Notre Dame Hounds-SJHL) ) added the CSS insurance goal with 12:51 remaining to make the final score 4-2. Dylan Nowakowski (Calgary, Alberta/Centennial HS (Brooks-AJHL) ) had the assist.

Killing the 5-on-3
Northland almost doubled the Saints in shots for the game (51-26). The big reason for that disparity was in the second period when the LumberJacks had 30 shots on goal. Northland got all of those shots on goal in the period due to two major checking from behind penalties called on the Saints at the same time with 11:13 left in the period. That meant the Saints had to kill a Northland 5-on-3 power-play for five minutes.

The Saints penalty kill stood tall and goaltender Tyler Bruggeman (North Mankato, Minn./Mankato West HS (Austin-NAHL) ) stood on his head, making 13 saves during that span, most from point blank range. The Saints also blocked four shots during that period to keep the score in tact at 2-1.

Bruggeman
Bruggeman finished the night with a career-high 49 saves. The 49 saves are the most in a game by a Saint since Colin Rundell made 50 saves against the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire on February 8, 2013.
