Men's Basketball Suffers First Loss

ST. CLOUD, Minn. (csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica men's basketball team was defeated by Mayville State University (N.D.) 79-62 Friday night in game one of the Husky Hoopster Classic, hosted by St. Cloud State University.
 
First Half
CSS stayed close in the first portion of the first half staying tied 14-14 with 11:13. Then, following a Mayville 16-5 run, CSS found themselves down 30-19 with just over five minutes to play in the first half.
 
The Saints would attempt to close out the half on a strong note, but a Comets 3-pointer with 13 seconds left put the halftime lead at 41-27 with the Saints on the wrong end of the scoreboard.
 
Second Half
CSS managed to cut the deficit to five points in the first eight minutes of the second half. They began the half on a 19-10 run to bring the score to 51-46 with 11:56 left.
 
Mayville would then pull away from CSS with an 18-4 in just over five minutes of gameplay, and with 5:28 left in the half, CSS found themselves down 59-53.
 
Mayville would ride out the rest of the game slowly building their lead en route to a 79-62 victory over CSS in game one of the St. Cloud State Tournament.
 
Brandon Newman (Barnum, Minn./Barnum HS) finished with 11 points for the Saints, going 5-of-6 from the free throw line, and Julius Johnson (Minneapolis, Minn./Henry Sibley HS) finished with 15 points shooting 75 percent from the field.
 
Key Stats
The Comets shot 52 percent from the floor and were 10-of-11 from the free throw line. The Saints shot 43 percent from the field. CSS committed 23 turnovers, which led to 29 Mayville State points. The Comtes out-scored the Saints 52-14 in the paint.
