ST. CLOUD, Minn. (csssaints.com) – Saint John's University made 13, 3-pointers and led throughout to defeat the St. Scholastica men's basketball team 78-59 on Saturday at the Husky Hoopster Classic, hosted by St. Cloud State.

First Half
SJU jumped out to an early 8-0 lead over first two minutes of the game. CSS would attempt to counter the early deficit with a run of their own, but managed just three points over the span of four minutes, and with just over 16 minutes left in the half CSS trailed 14-3.

The Saints would pull to as close as five points down midway through the half as they tried to claw their way out of the early hole. Nate Weets (Cloquet, Minn./Cloquet HS) got CSS back to within five at 22-17 with a good 3-pointer and a free throw with 7:15 to go in the half, but the Johnnies would counter with a 9-0 run to extend the lead back to 14 points.

SJU ended up closing the half up by eight points after Julius Johnson (Minneapolis, Minn./Henry Sibley HS) sunk a late 3-pointer for the Saints as the halftime scoreboard read 33-27 in favor of the Johnnies.

Second Half
CSS began the half with a Jake Naslund (Barnum, Minn./Barnum HS) layup to cut the score down to 33-29, but that was as close as they would get in the half as SJU proved to be too much for the Saints.

The Saints stayed strong in the opening 10 minutes of the first half playing very competitive basketball, while managing to keep the deficit within single digits, but with 10:50 to go and the score 49-40 SJU went on another 9-0 run to double their lead and secure the win in game two of the Husky Hoopster Classic 78-59.

Freshman Brandon Newman (Barnum, Minn./Barnum HS) led the way for the Saints scoring 20 points off the bench, while also securing six rebounds on the day. Andrew Laughlin (Duluth, Minn./Duluth Central HS) tallied six points and nine rebounds on the day.

Up Next
The Saints (1-2) will next be in action when they host Saint Mary's University on Sunday, November 29 with that game set to tip off at 3 p.m. in the Reif Gymnasium.
