Notables-Second time in the last three games the Saints have lost when leading after two periods-CSS had only one shot on goal in the third period-CSS' Bergerson scores first collegiate goal
WINONA, Minn. (csssaints.com) – For the second time in a week, the St. Scholastica men's hockey team did something it had not done in over eight years previously in its 5-2 loss at Saint Mary's University on Friday night.
Prior to last Friday's overtime loss to Nazareth College (N.Y.), the Saints had not lost a game when they led at the second intermission since December of 2006. Tonight, the Saints led 2-1 after two periods, but would surrender four third period goals in a 5-2 loss to the Cardinals.
Joel Paiement (Okotoks, Alberta/Holy Trinity Academy (Calgary Canucks-AJHL) ) got the scoring started for the Saints midway through the second period to make it 1-0.
Kale Derkson (Regina, Saskatchewan/Sheldon Williams Collegiate/Athol Murray College of Notre Dame (Notre Dame-SJHL)) and
Matt Malenstyn (Surrey, British Columbia/Tamanawis Secondary (Waywayseecappo-MJHL) ) had the assists. Saint Mary's evened the contest less than two minutes later on the power-play as the score was deadlocked at 1-1 at the first intermission.
The lone scoring of the second period belonged to St. Scholastica and
Hunter Bergerson (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East HS (Minot-NAHL) ) with the Duluth East graduate recording his first collegiate goal to make it 2-1 Saints after two.
Steven Phee (Balzac, Alberta/George McDougall HS (Canmore-AJHL) ) had the assist.
The Saints held the 2-1 lead until Martin Gruse found the net for the second time of the night with 9:23 left in regulation to tie it. The Cardinals (4-6-2) took their first lead of the night with 3:23 remaining on a Bob Marx power-play goal following a CSS five-minute charging penalty. Gruse completed the hat trick and Jed McGlasson found the empty net all in the final 26 seconds to make the final score 5-2 Saint Mary's.
CSS had only one shot and committed four of its six penalties for a total of 11 minutes in the third period.
Corey Koop (Squamish, British Columbia/Howe Sound Secondary (UW-Stout)) had 28 saves in the loss for the Saints. Christian Gaffy had 19 saves in the victory for the Cardinals.
The Saints (8-6-0) will be in St. Peter tomorrow night to face Gustavus Adolphus College. Puck drop is scheduled for 7 p.m.
