DULUTH, Minn. (csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica men's hockey team broke open a 1-1 game after one period and scored four goals in the second period on its way to a 6-1 Northern Collegiate Hockey Association (NCHA) victory over Lawrence University (Wis.) Friday night at Mars Lakeview Arena.

Dylan Nowakowski (Calgary, Alberta/Centennial HS (Brooks-AJHL) ) knotted the contest in the final minute of the opening period. The Saints had a 13-5 advantage in shots in the period.
One minute and 26 seconds into the second period, Nowakowski struck again for his second goal of the night to give the Saints a 2-1 lead.
Steven Phee (Balzac, Alberta/George McDougall HS (Canmore-AJHL) ) and
Matt Malenstyn (Surrey, British Columbia/Tamanawis Secondary (Waywayseecappo-MJHL) ) were credited with assists. A little over two minutes later,
Luke Simpson (Canmore, Alberta/Athol Murray College of Notre Dame (Canmore-AJHL) ) found the back of the net off a Nowakowski assist to extend the lead to 3-1.
Lawrence, the most penalized team in NCAA Division III, would then be called for a five minute major elbowing penalty and St. Scholastica took advantage scoring twice on that power-play.
Derek Hills (Campbell River, British Columbia/Timberline Secondary (Bowling Green State) ) added the first goal and
Derek Sutliffe (Las Vegas, Nev./Odyssey Charter School (Langley Rivermen-BCHL) ) had the second as the Saints had a 5-1 lead after 40 minutes of action. Nowakowski and
Dave Williams (Okotoks, Alberta/Athol Murray College of Notre Dame (Waywayseecappo-MJHL) ) assisted the Hills goal and Simpson and
Michael Spring (Kelowna, British Columbia/Okanagan Mission (Chilliwack-BCHL) ) assisted the Sutliffe goal.
The third period would see a five minute major and game disqualification for Lawrence which led to a bloodied
Brandon Parrone (Peoria, Ariz./Brophy College Prep (Melfort-SJHL) ). Simpson added the insurance goal for the Saints to make the final score 6-1.
Tyler Bruggeman (North Mankato, Minn./Mankato West HS (Austin-NAHL) ) had 14 saves in the victory for the Saints. Mattias Soderqvist picked up the loss in 29 minutes of action. Peter Emery allowed one goal in the final 31 minutes.
Both teams combined for 15 penalties for a total of 55 minutes. CSS finished 2-for-5 with the man-advantage, while the Vikings were 1-for-4.
The Saints (9-7-2, 6-4-1 NCHA) and Vikings (6-11-1, 5-6-0 NCHA) conclude their series tomorrow at Mars Lakeview Arena. Puck drop is scheduled for 4 p.m. and can be seen live on Saints Sports Net.
