MINNEAPOLIS (csssaints.com) – For the first time in Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) history, someone other than the St. Scholastica claimed the UMAC Women's Tennis Tournament title outright as the University of Northwestern defeated the Saints 6-3 on Saturday at the Baseline Tennis Center.

During the regular season, the teams split with both winning on each other's home courts and both winning by scores of 6-3.

The doubles matches begin dual match action and they typically decide the outcome of the entire match. The meetings between these two programs this year supported that. In Northwestern's 6-3 victory in the first meeting, they took two out of the three doubles matches. In CSS' 6-3 win late in the season, it swept all three doubles matches.

On Saturday, it would be Northwestern taking two out of three doubles matches to take an early lead in the match. The lone St. Scholastica doubles team to win was the No. 3 team of Allie Carlson (Aitkin, Minn./Aitkin HS) and Katie Kingston (Virginia, Minn./Virginia HS) by a score of 8-5. For the duo, it was their ninth straight victory.

In singles play, the Eagles proved to be too strong at No. 1 and No. 2 singles. Northwestern was also able to pull out a victory at No. 3 spot, something it hadn't done during the regular season meetings.

Aleksandra Ochrymowicz (Winnipeg, Manitoba/St. Mary’s Academy) won for the Saints at the No. 4 position 7-6 (7-1), 6-1 for her 11th straight victory. The final CSS winner of the day was Kingston at the No. 5 spot by scores of 6-0, 6-0 for her eighth straight win.

The Saints finish with an overall record of 17-7. They say goodbye to seniors Carlson, Ochrymowicz, Kelsey Geiger (Champlin, Minn./Champlin Park HS) and Pamela Hartley (Lima, Peru/Franklin Roosevelt College).
