Becky Huberty (Lena, Wis./Lena HS) earned All-America laurels for the second straight year at the NCAA Division III Outdoor Track & Field Championships, placing a program-best third in the hammer throw Thursday.
Huberty came into nationals with the second-best mark in the country. She was one of two athletes to throw over 57 meters this season.
On Thursday, she would throw over 57 meters again as on her second attempt she broke her own school record with a mark of 188'9" (57.53m). Huberty did not foul on any of her six attempts and would throw over 56 meters on her third and fourth attempts, but could not better her mark.
Senior Amina Avril of Williams College (Mass.), who came into the championships with the top mark this season, set the standard on Thursday in her very first attempt with a winning mark of 192'0" (58.52m). Senior Lydia Frangos of RPI finished second with a mark of 189'11" (57.90m) coming on her second attempt.
Huberty's third place finish is the highest-ever finish for a CSS Track & Field athlete at the NCAA Championships. She also becomes the third St. Scholastica athlete in school history to earn three NCAA Division III All-American awards (Nina Waidacher-Women's Hockey,
Chelsea Johnson (North Branch, Minn./Chisago Lakes HS)-Women's Cross Country, Women's Indoor Track & Field).
Kevin Wagner (Cleveland, Minn./Cleveland HS) opened the decathlon with a personal-best time of 11.24 in the 100m dash to place seventh in that event. He then placed 15th in the long jump with a mark of 20'2.25" (6.15m).
Wagner bounced back in the shot put with a season best mark of 39'7.75" (12.08m) to finish sixth in that event. In the high jump, Wagner tied for seventh, clearing an outdoor career-best 6'1.5" (1.87m). He finished day one of the championships with a 14th place finish in the 400m dash, posting a season-best time of 52.09.
Wagner accumulated a total of 3,446 points through the first five events and sits in 10th place. That is 27 points off the pace of last year's day one total for Wagner. Reminder that the top eight finishers receive All-America honors.
In his first NCAA Championships,
Jeremy Peterson (Hermantown, Minn./Hermantown HS) placed 19th in the hammer throw. Peterson fouled on two of his three attempts. His second throw was the only one that counted with a mark of 168'9" (51.43m).
Action continues tomorrow as Wagner completes the decathlon starting at 1 p.m. (ET). Huberty competes in the shot put at 5:15 p.m. (ET).
