Women's Tennis Captures at Least Share of UMAC Title

VIRGINIA, Minn. (csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica women's tennis team clinched at least a share of its 18th consecutive Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) regular season championship on Monday night with a 9-0 triumph over the University of Minnesota Morris at Quad Cities Tennis.

The Saints had already won three matches before the dual started as Morris didn't have players at No. 5 and No. 6 singles, along with No. 3 doubles.

The No. 1 doubles team of Alexis Gunderson (Virginia, Minn./Virginia HS) and Jessica Solberg (Bemidji, Minn. /Bemidji HS) won 8-1. The No. 2 tandem of Katie Kingston (Virginia, Minn./Virginia HS) and Allie Carlson (Aitkin, Minn./Aitkin HS) came out on top 8-4. Carlson and Kingston have won seven straight doubles matches.

The four singles flights that competed were all eight-game pro sets. At the No. 1 position, Madeleine Scanlan (St. Albans, England /Loreto College) won 8-5. Gunderson cruised at the No. 2 spot 8-2. At No. 3, Solberg was victorious 8-5. The final winner was Aleksandra Ochrymowicz (Winnipeg, Manitoba/St. Mary’s Academy) at the No. 4 spot 8-1. Solberg and Ochrymowicz have each won nine straight singles matches.

The Saints (16-6, 9-1 UMAC) will either be the No. 1 or No. 2 seed when the UMAC Tournament begins on Friday at the Baseline Tennis Center in Minneapolis. That will be determined on Tuesday. The Saints will play at 6 p.m. Friday night no matter what seed they are.
