Box Score NEW ULM, Minn. (csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica men's basketball team rallied from 17 points down to defeat Martin Luther College 70-67 Saturday.
CSS trailed 12-3 to start the game and later in the first half 30-13 with 9:26 to go. The Martin Luther lead remained in double-figures as it led 37-26 at halftime.
The Saints got it down to single digits two minutes into the second half and slowly got back in it. After the Knights led by eight with nine minutes to go in the contest, the Saints went on a 17-2 run over the next seven minutes to take a 67-60 lead.
Garret Pearson (Rush City, Minn./Rush City HS) made a 3-pointer to tie it up, followed by a 3-pointer by
Steve Golobich (Mountain Iron, Minn./Mountain Iron-Buhl HS (Mesabi Range CC)), and a layup by
Julius Johnson (Minneapolis, Minn./Henry Sibley HS) to push the Saints ahead. The Knights would get a look at a game-tying 3-pointer in the final seconds, but it was off the mark as the Saints prevailed 70-67.
The Saints were led by
Andrew Laughlin (Duluth, Minn./Duluth Central HS) with 13 points.
Scottie Rucks (St. Cloud, Minn./St. Cloud Cathedral HS) added 10 points.
Jake Naslund (Barnum, Minn./Barnum HS) grabbed a team-high five rebounds. Leading scorers for the Knights (5-16, 4-6 UMAC) were Todd Brassow and Galen Holzhueter both with 18 points on the night.
CSS shot 67 percent from the floor in the second half to finish at 54 percent for the game. All five 3-pointers the Saints made came in the second half. Martin Luther, who shot 68 percent in the first half, was only 31 percent in the second half. The Saints bench out-scored Martin Luther's bench 32-4.
The Saints (8-13, 5-5 UMAC) will be back home next weekend as they host Crown College Friday and the University of Minnesota Morris on Saturday. The Crown game is set to tip off at 7:30 p.m. Watch all the action live on Saints Sports Net.
