Box Score ST. PAUL (csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica women's basketball team defeated the University of Northwestern 68-63 in the regular season finale on Saturday and, in doing so, clinched the No. 2 seed and a home UMAC Tournament semifinal game on Wednesday.
Entering the day, the Saints could finish anywhere from the No. 2 seed thru the No. 4 seed. The top four teams in the league all played each other on this final day. In the end, the same matchups that took place today will happen again on Wednesday, just on the opposing team's court.
In the first meeting between the Saints and Eagles this season, Northwestern jumped out to an early lead, only to have Saints claw back in and force overtime, where they eventually won.
On Saturday, neither team would have a lead of more than five points first half with eight ties and 13 lead changes. The Eagles had the biggest lead of the half at five early in the game, while CSS's
Sammy Doucette (Colfax, Wis./Colfax HS (UW-River Falls)) hit a 3-pointer in the waning moments of the half to make it 38-38 at halftime for the eighth tie of the contest.
The Saints shot 37 percent from the floor in the first half, but made six 3-pointers. Northwestern shot 44 percent from the field in the half and were 11-for-14 from the free throw line.
St. Scholastica started the second half with a 13-2 run to go up by 11 with 14 minutes to go.
Danica Schellbach (Rush City, Minn./Rush City HS) had a pair of 3-pointers during that span.
The Saints led by nine with five minutes remaining, but would not make a field goal in the final five minutes. The Eagles chipped away and got the lead down to three with a minute remaining. Northwestern got a possession down by three in the final 30 seconds, but would turn the ball over.
Kelsey Sorenson-Giffrow (Braham, Minn./Braham HS (Minn. Duluth)) sealed the win for the Saints with a pair of free throws to make the final score 68-63.
Northwestern shot only 31 percent in the second half and was 1-for-12 from beyond the arc. The Saints matched a program record with 12, 3-point field goals. The Saints also set a program record with their 11th UMAC victory.
Sorenson led the Saints with 15 points, followed by
Elena Huber (Northfield, Minn./Northfield HS) with 14. Huber was 4-for-8 on 3-point attempts.
Erin Frase (Phillips, Wis./Phillips HS (UW-River Falls)) added 10 points. Schellbach nearly had a double-double with nine points and 10 rebounds. Mollie Sir and Chanel Madson had 16 points each to lead the Eagles. Jessica Fife had 15 points and 10 rebounds for a double-double.
The Saints (16-9, 11-3 UMAC) will host the Eagles (18-7, 10-4 UMAC) Wednesday night in a UMAC Tournament Semifinal at the Reif Gymnasium. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. The game can be seen live on Saints Sports Net.
