HOUGHTON, Mich. (csssaints.com) –
Paul Schommer (Appleton, Wis./Kimberly HS) led a trio of St. Scholastica men's skiers in eighth, ninth and 10th in the NCAA Central Regional 10km Classic race Saturday at the Michigan Tech trails.
Only three schools were represented in the NCAA All-Region honors, which go to the top 10 finishers in the race.
Northern Michigan's Kyle Bratrud took the win in a time of 29:53.8, ahead of three straight Alaska Nanooks. Logan Hanneman finished a scant 1.9 seconds behind in 29:55.7, while teammates Michael Feherenbach and Max Olex finished third and fourth in 30:02.2 and 30:37.8, respectively.
Northern Michigan took spots five through seven, before Schommer and teammates
John Wessling (Maple Grove, Minn./Maple Grove HS) in ninth and
Chris Parr (Eagan, Minn./Eagan HS) in 10th rounded out the top 10 in 31:24.2 and 31:34.2.
The Saints finished third on the day with 51 points, behind winners, Alaska, with 66, and Northern Michigan with 63.
"I'm very enthused with what happened as a team. We got 3 all region skiers in a single race, and that is huge for the program," according to Saints head coach
Chad Salmela.
While the worst showing of the year for Schommer, it all but seals his trip to his second appearance in the NCAA Championship. Schommer entered the weekend as the seventh ranked classic skier in the region and third ranked freestyle skier. His eighth place finish on the day should secure his qualification regardless of Sunday's 20km freestyle results.
The men finish the season with the NCAA Central Regional Championship 15km mass start freestyle Sunday in Houghton.
