GENEVA, Ill. (csssaints.com) – No.12 St. Scholastica men's hockey defeated Aurora College by a score of 6-3 on Sunday afternoon.
The Saints get back into the win column following a two-game sweep at the hands of Lake Forest College on Friday and Saturday.
CSS quickly jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first period with
Dylan Nowakowski (Calgary, Alberta/Centennial HS (Brooks-AJHL) ) scoring an unassisted goal at the 2:42 mark. Aurora would answer back shortly after to tie the score at 1-1 following a Joe Jablonski goal.
Dave Williams (Okotoks, Alberta/Athol Murray College of Notre Dame (Waywayseecappo-MJHL) ) would put the Saints up a goal once again when he scored his second goal of the season from
Keegan Bruce (Bellingham, Wash./Bellingham HS (Weyburn-SJHL) ) and
Justin Krabben (Rocky Mountain House, Alberta/Hunting Hills HS (Canmore-AJHL) ). Nowakowski added his second goal of the game at 12:32 of the first period to make the score 3-1.
Luke Simpson (Canmore, Alberta/Athol Murray College of Notre Dame (Canmore-AJHL) ) and
Steven Phee (Balzac, Alberta/George McDougall HS (Canmore-AJHL) ) provided the assists on the goal.
St. Scholastica continued its goal-scoring run in the second period with
Luke Simpson (Canmore, Alberta/Athol Murray College of Notre Dame (Canmore-AJHL) ) scoring less than one minute into the period from Phee and Nowakowski. Andrew Bergquist scored the Spartans second goal of the game from Paul Lochner to cut the deficit to 4-2.
Luke Simpson (Canmore, Alberta/Athol Murray College of Notre Dame (Canmore-AJHL) ) and
Dave Williams (Okotoks, Alberta/Athol Murray College of Notre Dame (Waywayseecappo-MJHL) ) would each score their second goals of the game before the second period ended. Simpson's goal came at 8:38 from
Derek Hills (Campbell River, British Columbia/Timberline Secondary (Bowling Green State) ) and
Keegan Bruce (Bellingham, Wash./Bellingham HS (Weyburn-SJHL) ). Williams' goal, which came on the power play, was scored at 17:59 of the second from Bruce.
In the third period both teams tightened up defensively as only one goal was scored in the period. Anthony Pnewski scored the lone goal for Aurora at 17:13 of the third from Jablonski and Ryan Davlantes bringing the final score to 6-3.
Tyler Bruggeman (North Mankato, Minn./Mankato West HS (Austin-NAHL) ) played the first two periods in net for CSS making 11 saves on 13 shots faced before being replaced by
Connor Lucas (Hermantown, Minn./Hermantown HS ) for the final period. Lucas made six saves on seven shots.
Michael Kitts took the loss in goal for Aurora making 36 saves on 42 shots.
The Saints next game is Saturday at the University of St. Thomas with puck drop at 7 p.m.
