ST. PAUL, Minn. (csssaints.com) – No.14 St. Scholastica men's hockey lost to the University of St. Thomas 4-2 on Saturday night.
St. Thomas took a 1-0 lead over the Saints at the 8:52 mark of the first period when Jordan Lovick found the back of the net from Bobby Murphy and Johnny Rosium.
CSS got a power play opportunity late in the first period but could not convert.
St. Scholastica started off the second by putting the Tommies on the power play less than a minute into the period. UST would be unable to capitalize.
Just six minutes late St. Thomas got another power play opportunity and took advantage to go up 2-0. Connor McBride was the goal scorer for the Tommies. UST would take their two goal lead into the third period.
After having their first two power plays killed off successfully by St. Thomas, the Saints would finally break through with a power play goal at 7:06 of the third period.
Matt Malenstyn (Surrey, British Columbia/Tamanawis Secondary (Waywayseecappo-MJHL) ) scored the goal for CSS from
Justin Krabben (Rocky Mountain House, Alberta/Hunting Hills HS (Canmore-AJHL) ) and
Keegan Bruce (Bellingham, Wash./Bellingham HS (Weyburn-SJHL) ).
It wouldn't take long for St. Thomas to take back its two-goal cushion with Willie Faust scoring at 10:13 on the power play.
St. Scholastica would once again cut the deficit to just one goal with less than five minutes remaining in regulation with
Dave Williams (Okotoks, Alberta/Athol Murray College of Notre Dame (Waywayseecappo-MJHL) ) scoring the Saints second power play goal of the game at 16:10.
Keegan Bruce (Bellingham, Wash./Bellingham HS (Weyburn-SJHL) ) and
Justin Krabben (Rocky Mountain House, Alberta/Hunting Hills HS (Canmore-AJHL) ) contributed their second assists of the game.
Unable to find the equalizer and with time running out, CSS was forced to pull their goaltender in favor the extra-attacker. The Tommies would take advantage of the empty-net with Alex Altenbernd scoring to put the game out of reach at 4-2 with 11 seconds remaining.
Corey Koop (Squamish, British Columbia/Howe Sound Secondary (UW-Stout)) made 35 saves for CSS on the night.
With the loss, St. Scholastica's overall record drops to 7-4.
