LAKE FOREST, Ill. (csssaints.com) – No.12 St. Scholastica men's hockey suffered its first sweep of the season after being defeated 3-1 by Lake Forest College on Saturday night.
The Saints started out the game strong taking the lead at the 1:54 mark of the first period on
Michael Spring (Kelowna, British Columbia/Okanagan Mission (Chilliwack-BCHL) )'s second goal of the season.
Rich Coyne (Cave Creek, Ariz./Pinnacle HS (Alaska-Fairbanks) ) and
Brandon Parrone (Peoria, Ariz./Brophy College Prep (Melfort-SJHL) ) added assists on the goal.
The Foresters would tie the game at 1-1 before the end of the first period with Luke Swardenski scoring an unassisted power-play goal at 13:42. The goal was Swardenski's seventh of the year.
St. Scholastica and LFC would play a scoreless second period despite both teams getting ample power play opportunities in a penalty filled period.
At 3:25 of the third period Swardenski would put the Foresters up 2-1 with his second goal of the game and eighth of the season. Jack Lewis picked up the assist on the play. Swardenski's goal would be the eventual game-winner as St. Scholastica struggled to threaten the LFC net managing only seven shots in the period.
Lake Forest would ice the game with 24 seconds remaining in regulation with Jason McAloon adding an empty-net goal to make it 3-1.
Corey Koop (Squamish, British Columbia/Howe Sound Secondary (UW-Stout)) took his first loss of the season for the Saints in a 34 save effort.
Leo Podolsky started the game for Lake Forest College and made 25 saves before being replaced by Lyndon Stanwood with 5:33 left to play in the game. Stanwood recorded three saves to seal the victory for the Foresters.
The Saints are back in action on Sunday when they take on Aurora College (Ill.) at 2 p.m.
