DULUTH, Minn. (csssaints.com) – No.11 St. Scholastica men's hockey defeated No.14 St. John's University by a score of 2-1 on Tuesday night at Mars Lakeview Arena.
The Saints were able to strike first against the No.14 ranked Johnnies in their first non-conference game of the season with freshmen forward
Luke Simpson (Canmore, Alberta/Athol Murray College of Notre Dame (Canmore-AJHL) ) scoring his third goal of the year at 16:44 of the opening period.
Derek Sutliffe (Las Vegas, Nev./Odyssey Charter School (Langley Rivermen-BCHL) ) picked up the assist on the goal for his team-leading 12
th point of the season.
St. John's managed only six shots in the first period and were unable to score despite earning three power play opportunities in the period.
Halfway through the second period St. Scholastica doubled its lead with
Sam Williams (Winnipeg, Manitoba/River East Collegiate (Melville-SJHL) ) scoring a power-play goal, his second of the season, to bring the score to 2-0.
Dylan Nowakowski (Calgary, Alberta/Centennial HS (Brooks-AJHL) ) and
Justin Krabben (Rocky Mountain House, Alberta/Hunting Hills HS (Canmore-AJHL) ) recorded assists on the special teams marker.
Just over five minutes into the third period the Johnnies would finally find the back of the net with Sam Valerius scoring from Nick Senta and Daniel Tripicchio.
The Saints, however, would not allow another goal. With the goalie pulled for an extra attacker, St. John's gave everything they had to tie the score before the end of regulation but CSS was able to hold on for the victory.

Tyler Bruggeman (North Mankato, Minn./Mankato West HS (Austin-NAHL) ) earned his fourth win of the season with a 15 save performance. Saxton Soley took the loss in net for the Johnnies while making 18 saves on the night.
CSS now improves to 6-1 on the season and a hold perfect 5-0 record when playing at home.
The Saints return to action on December 5
th when they hit the road to take on Lake Forest College (Ill.) in the first game of a two-game series. Puck drop is at 7:30 p.m.
