MIDWAY, Utah (csssaints.com) – Junior
Chris Parr (Eagan, Minn./Eagan HS) posted the top finish for the St. Scholastica skiers, placing 57th in the men's 1.5km freestyle sprint Sunday at the 2014 U.S. National Skiing Championships.
The race was won in the finals by Torin Koos of Wenatchee, Wash.
Not a CCSA, nor NCAA qualifier event, no CCSA team scores were calculated, though the CCSA was well represented as three conference skiers advanced to the quarterfinals in Max Olex of Alaska qualifying 12th, teammate Logan Hanneman qualifying 21st, and Northern Michigan's George Cartwright qualifying 23rd. The top 30 finishers in the qualifying round advance to quarterfinals. Parr finished 5.09 seconds from the qualifying mark and seventh among CCSA schools.
Hanneman was the only CCSA skier to advance from the quarterfinals, making it to the finals and finishing an impressive fifth on the day.
Saints freshman
Reitler Hodgert (Bend, Ore./Summit HS ) was the second Saint, finishing 79th and ninth in the CCSA, while sophomore
Joe Dubay (Coon Rapids, Minn./Andover HS) ended the day in 87th and 10th in the CCSA.
"I wanted to just get this hard effort in with a top National field for our guys to experience and foster some top end form," said Saints head coach
Chad Salmela. "We definitely did not prepare heavily for a sprint of any kind, let alone this level, so the results today are actually fairly pleasant. Three guys in the CCSA top 10 is alright by me."
The Saints get two days off before they resume CCSA and NCAA qualification action on Wednesday with the U.S. National Championships 30km freestyle mass start.
