DULUTH, Minn. (csssaints.com) – For the second consecutive season, the St. Scholastica women's tennis team blanked its city rival University of Minnesota-Duluth 9-0 Friday night at the Arrowhead Tennis Center to open its 2014 season.
The No. 2 doubles team of
Madeleine Scanlan (St. Albans, England /Loreto College) and
Alexa Herbst (Foley, Minn. /Foley HS) was the first match to finish, beating their opponents 8-0. The No. 1 duo of
Alexis Gunderson (Virginia, Minn./Virginia HS) and
Jessica Solberg (Bemidji, Minn. /Bemidji HS) followed with an 8-1 win. The No. 3 team of
Allie Carlson (Aitkin, Minn./Aitkin HS) and
Katie Kingston (Virginia, Minn./Virginia HS) came out on top 8-4.
In singles action, Gunderson won at the No. 1 spot 6-1, 6-1. Solberg followed suit at No. 2 by scores of 6-0, 6-1. Scanlan at No.3 and
Aleksandra Ochrymowicz (Winnipeg, Manitoba/St. Mary’s Academy) at No. 4 both won by scores of 6-1, 6-4.
Kingston was victorious at the No. 5 spot 6-1, 6-0. The final winner on the night was
Pamela Hartley (Lima, Peru/Franklin Roosevelt College) at the No. 6 position, taking it in a third set super-breaker 6-4, 6-7 (5-7), (10-6).
The Saints will be on the road tomorrow as they head to the Baseline Tennis Center in Minneapolis for a pair of matches against MIAC opponents. The Saints will first face Hamline University at 2:30 p.m. and then Bethel University at 7 p.m.
