Saints Overwhelm LumberJacks

Box Score DULUTH, Minn. (csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica men's hockey team dominated Northland College 9-2 in a Northern Collegiate Hockey Association (NCHA) game Friday night at Mars Lakeview Arena.

The Saints tallied three goals in the first period, with the first coming from Derek Sutliffe (Las Vegas, Nev./Odyssey Charter School (Langley Rivermen-BCHL) ) in the sixth minute of play.  Bobby Lipsett (Salmon Arm, British Columbia/Salmon Arm Secondary (Salmon Arm-BCHL) ) followed with a goal less than a minute later, assisted by Brandon Parrone (Peoria, Ariz./Brophy College Prep (Melfort-SJHL) ) and Dylan Nowakowski (Calgary, Alberta/Centennial HS (Brooks-AJHL) ). 

The third goal for the Saints came from Paul Marcoux (Brandon, Manitoba /Vincent Massey Collegiate (Waywayseecappo-MJHL) ).  Parrone and Brandon Nowakowski (Calgary, Alberta/Central Memorial HS (Calgary Royals-AJHL)) had the assists. 

50 seconds into the second period B. Nowakowski scored his first power play goal of the game giving the Saints a 4-0 lead.  In the sixth minute, Dave Williams (Okotoks, Alberta/Athol Murray College of Notre Dame (Waywayseecappo-MJHL) ) scored his seventh goal of the season assisted by Alex Valenti (Blaine, Wash./Bellingham HS (Merritt-BCHL) ) and Chad Golanowski (Calgary, Alberta/Bishop Carroll HS (Calgary Canucks-AJHL) ).

The Saints were on another power play with five minutes left when D. Nowakowski lit the lamp with help from Valenti and Justin Krabben (Rocky Mountain House, Alberta/Hunting Hills HS (Canmore-AJHL) ). 

On back-to-back power play opportunities, Marcoux registered his second goal of the game giving the Saints a seven goal lead.  Valenti assisted for the third straight goal and D. Nowakowski tallied his second assist for the night.  After goal number seven the LumberJacks switched goalie Jesse DiLillo with Mason Riley.

Valenti was not finished compiling assists as he helped Golanowski in the beginning of the third period to score the Saints' eighth goal.

Northland College finally scored after 53 minutes of play when Thomas Greene tallied two power play goals that were 14 seconds apart making the score 8-2.

The Saints answered back on a power play in the last two minutes of the game.  B. Nowakowski had the final goal for CSS, assisted by Ryne Bodger (Duncan, British Columbia/Cowichan Secondary (Merritt-BCHL) ) and Golanowski.

Tyler Bruggeman (North Mankato, Minn./Mankato West HS (Austin-NAHL) ) was in net for the Saints and saw only 12 shots for the night, stopping all but two.  DiLillo of the LumberJacks stopped 13 out of 20 shots in the first and second period and alternate Jacks goaltender Riley had 11 shots and stopped all but two.

CSS was 4-for-5 on power plays and Northland was 2-for-3.  Overall shots were 40-14 in favor of the Saints.

The Saints (11-5-4, 8-2-3 NCHA) will head to Ashland, Wis. tomorrow to face Northland College (3-17-0, 3-10-0 NCHA) to finish off the series.  Puck Drop is at 7 p.m.
