Saints Fall In Double Overtime Heartbreaker

Box Score ST. PAUL, Minn. (csssaints.com) - The St. Scholastica men's soccer team suffered a nail-biting double overtime loss tonight against Macalester College by a score of 1-0.

In the first half Joe Watt (London, England/North West Kent College) had a couple of chances to get the Saints on top, but both shots were blocked by the Macalester defense. At the end of the half, Macalester had a 4-2 edge in the shots.

The Saints came out firing in the second half as they had several opportunities, which including a header off a corner kick, to take the lead within the first 20 minutes of the half. The middle of the half saw a slowdown in the action until the Saints got a late surge in the last five minutes with a couple more great chances to put the game away.

The Saints had a huge 8-3 advantage in shots in the second half as they peppered the Macalester goalkeeper throughout the half.

The first of the two overtimes was relatively quiet as Macalester got the only shot off late in the 10 minute period.

The second overtime started with a great corner kick followed by a shot that went wide of the net. Just like the Saints at the end of the second half, Macalester had an offensive surge in the last couple minutes of the game and were able to capitalize with a header off of a cross from the left side with 10 seconds left in the game.

CSS had a slight edge in shots at 11-10 and also had a 5-2 advantage on corner kicks.

The Saints look to get back in the win column on Tuesday afternoon as they start UMAC competition in Ashland, Wisconsin against Northland. The action starts at 2:30 p.m.
