MINNEAPOLIS (csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica women's tennis team defeated Northwestern College 7-2 on Saturday in the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) Tournament Championship match at the Baseline Tennis Center.

In the 17-year history of the UMAC Postseason Tournament, the Saints (21-5) have won the title outright 16 times and shared it once. Only in the last two years, has the UMAC postseason championship been determined by a team tournament. Prior to that it was an individual flighted tournament where the team with the most points won the title.

The Saints defeated Northwestern last Saturday 8-1 in the regular season finale at the Arrowhead Tennis Center. In that contest, the Saints swept all three doubles contests. Today, Northwestern would win the top doubles spot, but the Saints took the other two to take a 2-1 lead early.

The No. 2 team of Rachael Zwiener (St. Cloud, Minn./Home School) and Kelli Johnson (Mankato, Minn./Mankato West HS) won 8-5. The No. 3 duo of Megan Lawrence (Park Rapids, Minn./Park Rapids HS) and Alexa Herbst (Foley, Minn. /Foley HS) won for the 12th straight time also by an 8-5 score.

In singles action, Zwiener won her 11th straight singles match with a 6-4, 6-2 triumph at the No. 2 spot. Alexis Gunderson (Virginia, Minn./Virginia HS) rallied from a set down to win in a third set super-breaker at the No. 3 spot 2-6, 7-5, (10-6).

Lawrence won her 20th match of the year with a 6-1, 6-4 victory at the No. 4 spot. Like Gunderson, Johnson rallied from a set down to win by scores of 3-6, 6-3, (10-7) at the No. 5 spot. The final winner was Aleksandra Ochrymowicz (Winnipeg, Manitoba/St. Mary’s Academy) at No. 6 by scores of 6-1, 6-2.

The 21 wins this season are the third-most in program history. CSS is also on an 11-match winning streak, the third-longest in program history. The Saints also set a program record for best singles winning percentage in a season (.781).
