MOUNT VERNON, Iowa (csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica men's and women's track & field teams opened their outdoor season Saturday afternoon with an impressive performance in the field events for both genders at the Cornell College Invitational Meet.
The only two Saints on the men's side to finish in the top three in the track events were
Justin Hanson (Atwater, Minn./Atwater-Cosmos-Grove City HS) and
Kevin Wagner (Cleveland, Minn./Cleveland HS), who took first and second in the 110m hurdles, respectively. Hanson ran a 15.85 and Wagner ran a 15.94.
The women had six members break into the top three spots in the finals.
Laurel Ohaju (Duluth, Minn./Duluth Central HS) blazed through the 400m dash with a winning time of 1:01.19 seconds, and teammate
Brianna Buske (Bloomer, Wis./Bloomer HS) finished second with a 1:01.74.
Maggie Bair (Ham Lake, Minn./Blaine HS) took second in the 100m hurdles, running a 15.84, and
Emily Lundgren (Aitkin, Minn./Aitkin HS) ran a 2:27.07 in the 800m run, also good for second.
Rachel Thelen (Park Rapids, Minn./Park Rapids HS) placed third in the 100m dash with a time of 13.14. The Saints 4x400m relay team of Lundgren, Buske, Ohaju and
Maggie Kurtovich (Andover, Minn./Andover HS) also placed third with a time of 4.09.12.
However, the men turned in a solid performance in the field.
Jeremy Peterson (Hermantown, Minn./Hermantown HS) placed second in the shot put with a distance of 46'8.75” (14.24m), while
Peter Drinkwine (Superior, Wis./Superior HS) placed second in the triple jump with a mark of 41'5.75” (12.64m).
Travis Ambuehl (Lake Linden, Mich./Lake Linden-Hubbell HS)'s pole vault of 13'11.25” (4.25m) was good for second as well, while
Riley Niebuhr (Wells, Minn./United South Central HS (Minn.-Duluth)) finished third with a height of 12'11.5” (3.95m).
Alex Horoshak (Two Harbors, Minn./Two Harbors HS) placed third in the long jump with a distance of 20'7.75” (6.29m) and
Corey Anderson (Duluth, Minn./Hermantown HS) took third in the high jump, clearing 6'1.5” (1.87m).
For the women, the Saints swept the top three spots in the pole vault. The trio of
Maggie Bair (Ham Lake, Minn./Blaine HS),
Shelby Dugas (New Prague, Minn./New Prague HS) and
Olivia Krejcarek (Manitowoc, Wis./Manitowoc Roncalli HS) all vaulted the same winning height of 10'0” (3.05m) with Bair taking the fewest attempts to do so and taking first.
Rachel Miller (Hinckley, Minn./Hinckley-Finlayson HS)'s triple jump of 35'8.5” (10.88m) was also good for first, while
Danielle Dickson (Roseville, Minn./Totino Grace HS/Roseville HS) won the long jump with a jump of 17'0” (5.18m).
Nicole Christianson (Coon Rapids, Minn./Coon Rapids HS)'s 5”1.75” (1.57m) high jump was the best of the meet, while
Becky Huberty (Lena, Wis./Lena HS) placed third in the shot put breaking her own program record with a throw of 43'5” (13.23m).
Emily Schwantke (Brook Park, Minn./Hinckley-Finlayson HS) was third in javelin with a mark of 101'10” (31.05m).
