Women’s Tennis Splits in Split-Squad Action

DULUTH, Minn. (csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica women's tennis team played in two locations at once Friday night defeating Bethany Lutheran College 9-0 in St. Peter, but falling to the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire 8-1 in Eau Claire.

One portion of the team faced Bethany Lutheran (1-10, 1-3 UMAC) in a conference match at the Swanson Tennis Center in St. Peter.

Megan Lawrence (Park Rapids, Minn./Park Rapids HS) and Alexa Herbst (Foley, Minn. /Foley HS) won at No. 1 doubles 8-3. Lawrence also won her seventh straight singles match at the No. 1 spot 6-1, 6-0. Herbst won at No. 2 singles 6-0, 6-3.

Jill Kammerer (St. Paul, Minn./Henry Sibley HS) and Katie Kingston (Virginia, Minn./Virginia HS) won at No. 2 doubles 8-6. Kingston was victorious at No. 3 singles 7-5, 6-0, while Kammerer won at the No. 5 spot 6-3, 6-3.

Kelsey Geiger (Champlin, Minn./Champlin Park HS) and Halle Nystrom (Fargo, N.D. /Fargo North HS) won at No. 3 doubles 8-0. Geiger won 6-2, 6-1 at No. 4 singles and Nystrom came out on top at No. 6 singles 6-2, 6-2. For Nystrom, it was her first collegiate singles and doubles victories.

The other portion of the team played a non-conference match at UW-Eau Claire. The Blugolds (14-2) are ranked 17th in the central region by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA). The lone winner for the Saints was Rachael Zwiener (St. Cloud, Minn./Home School) at No. 2 singles by scores of 6-3, 1-6, (10-7). Hillary Bungarden (Hibbing, Minn./Hibbing HS) saw her eight-match winning streak at No. 1 singles come to an end with a 6-4, 6-4 loss.

The Saints (11-5, 3-0 UMAC) will play both Martin Luther College and North Central University tomorrow. The Martin Luther match is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. in New Ulm, while the North Central match will begin at 7 p.m. at the Baseline Tennis Center in Minneapolis.
