Women’s Tennis Captures 17th Straight UMAC Title

DULUTH, Minn. (csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica women's tennis team wrapped up another undefeated Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) regular season with an 8-1 victory on Saturday over Northwestern College at the Arrowhead Tennis Center.

With the win, the Saints clinched their 17th consecutive UMAC regular season championship and extended their conference regular season unbeaten streak to 111 matches. The Saints have never lost in UMAC competition since the league was started in 1997.

The Saints began the day by sweeping all three doubles matches. The No. 1 team of Hillary Bungarden (Hibbing, Minn./Hibbing HS) and Alexis Gunderson (Virginia, Minn./Virginia HS) won 8-5. That was the same score for the No. 2 team of Kelli Johnson (Mankato, Minn./Mankato West HS) and Rachael Zwiener (St. Cloud, Minn./Home School). The No. 3 duo of Alexa Herbst (Foley, Minn. /Foley HS) and Megan Lawrence (Park Rapids, Minn./Park Rapids HS) blanked their opponents 8-0 for their 10th straight victory.

In singles action, Zwiener won her ninth straight match with a 6-2, 6-2 triumph at the No. 2 spot. After a slow start, Gunderson turned it on at the No. 3 spot winning by scores of 7-6 (7-1), 6-1.

Lawrence prevailed at the No. 4 position by scores of 6-3. 6-3. Johnson came out on top at the No. 5 spot 7-5, 6-3. The final winner on the day was Aleksandra Ochrymowicz (Winnipeg, Manitoba/St. Mary’s Academy) at No. 6 singles by scores of 6-4, 6-0.

The Saints (19-5, 10-0 UMAC) will have to wait and see who their UMAC Tournament semifinal opponent will be next Friday at the Baseline Tennis Center as there are still some UMAC matches to played in the next few days.
