Two Records Fall for Men’s Track & Field

DULUTH, Minn. (csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica men's track & field team broke two program records over the weekend as the team competed at three different meets in Iowa and Minnesota.

The Saints competed at the Drake Relays in Des Moines, Iowa, the Kip Janvrin Open in Indianola, Iowa and Saint Mary's Open in Winona.

Drake Relays
On Saturday, the sprint medley relay team of Samora Johnson (Milwaukee, Wis./Milwaukee Pius XI (UW-Whitewater)), Ryan Guentzel (Two Harbors, Minn./Two Harbors HS), Justin Hanson (Atwater, Minn./Atwater-Cosmos-Grove City HS) and Luke McKenzie (Taylors Falls, Minn./Chisago Lakes HS) set a program record with a time of 3:31.71 to finish 15th overall.

On Friday, the 4x200m relay of Johnson, Hanson, Guentzel and Alex Horoshak (Two Harbors, Minn./Two Harbors HS) just missed the program record, finishing in a time of 1:31.55 to place fifth in their heat at the Drake Relays. It is the second-fastest time in program history.

Kip Janvrin Open
Later in the day Friday at the Kip Janvrin Open at Simpson College (Iowa), Charlie Habermann (Proctor, Minn./Proctor HS) broke the program record in the 3,000m steeplechase with a time of 9:48.44. Habermann beat his own previous record by 29 seconds. Mike Naumann (Poplar, Wis./Northwestern HS) placed 16th in the 400m hurdles with a time of 58.94. Chris Lawson (Minneapolis, Minn./St. Anthony Village) was 18th in the 1,500m run posting a time of 4:12.79.

Saint Mary's Open
Peter Drinkwine (Superior, Wis./Superior HS) placed third in the triple jump at the Saint Mary's Open on Saturday with a mark of 41'5” (12.62m). Jeremy Peterson (Hermantown, Minn./Hermantown HS) was fourth in the shot put with a mark of 46'9.5” (14.26m). He was also fifth in the discus throw at 142'10” (43.55m) and sixth in the hammer throw at 145'8” (44.39m).

Calvin Mehrhof (Coon Rapids, Minn./Coon Rapids HS ) was fourth in the 5,000m run with a time of 16:58.4. He was also eighth in the 3,000m steeplechase, finishing in 10:33.57. Kelin Dunfee (St. Paul, Minn./St. Paul Central HS) placed fifth in the javelin with a throw of 150'5” (45.85m).

Zach Visina (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East HS) was sixth in the high jump clearing 5'10.75” (1.80m) Corey Anderson (Duluth, Minn./Hermantown HS) also cleared that height and was eighth.

The Saints will compete at the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) Outdoor Championships next Saturday in Morris, Minn.
