Women’s Tennis Sweeps Vikings and Knights

VIRGINIA, Minn. (csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica women's tennis team swept Bethany Lutheran College and Martin Luther College winning both matches by a score of 9-0 on Saturday.

On Saturday morning, Hillary Bungarden (Hibbing, Minn./Hibbing HS) started off singles action with a win and was followed by Rachael Zwiener (St. Cloud, Minn./Home School) and Alexis Gunderson (Virginia, Minn./Virginia HS). Kelli Johnson (Mankato, Minn./Mankato West HS), Aleksandra Ochrymowicz (Winnipeg, Manitoba/St. Mary’s Academy) and Kelsey Geiger (Champlin, Minn./Champlin Park HS) finished out singles play shutting out their opponents 6-0, 6-0.

Doubles action saw No.1 spot of Bungarden/Gunderson win 8-4, No.2 duo of Zwiener and Katie Kingston (Virginia, Minn./Virginia HS) won by a score of 8-2, and No.3 pair of Megan Lawrence (Park Rapids, Minn./Park Rapids HS) and Jill Kammerer (St. Paul, Minn./Henry Sibley HS) shut out their opponent 8-0.

Bethany Lutheran is now 3-13 overall 3-4 in the UMAC. 

Late Saturday afternoon, the Saints took on Martin Luther with Lawrence getting things started in singles action. She was followed by Geiger, Kammerer, Allie Carlson (Aitkin, Minn./Aitkin HS), Halle Nystrom (Fargo, N.D. /Fargo North HS) and Sarah Cooke (Hermantown, Minn. /Hermantown HS (Briar Cliff)) who all recorded wins in singles play.

Doubles play followed the same tune of the day, with No.1 team of Kammerer and Alexa Herbst (Foley, Minn. /Foley HS) taking their match 8-2, Carlson and Katie Kingston (Virginia, Minn./Virginia HS) winning 8-1 in the No.2 spot, and the No. 3 duo of Nystrom and Cooke coming out victorious by a score of 8-3.

The Saints (16-5, 8-0 UMAC) will close out the weekend against Minnesota Morris on Sunday at the Arrowhead Tennis Center in Duluth. The action is slated to begin at 10 a.m.
