Women’s Tennis Goes 1-1 on Monday

ORLANDO, Fla. (csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica women's tennis team extended its winning streak to four with a win in the morning against Saint Ambrose University (Iowa) on Monday, but fell in the afternoon to Marian University (Ind.). Both opponents were NAIA programs.

The Saints opened the day with an 8-1 victory over Saint Ambrose. CSS swept all six singles matches, winning all in straight sets and not dropping more than three games in any particular match.

Hillary Bungarden (Hibbing, Minn./Hibbing HS) won 6-2, 6-0 at No. 1. Rachael Zwiener (St. Cloud, Minn./Home School) won by scores of 6-1, 6-0 at No. 2. Alexis Gunderson (Virginia, Minn./Virginia HS) was victorious at the No. 3 spot 6-3, 6-0. Aleksandra Ochrymowicz (Winnipeg, Manitoba/St. Mary’s Academy) at No. 4, Kelsey Geiger (Champlin, Minn./Champlin Park HS) at No. 5 and Sarah Cooke (Hermantown, Minn. /Hermantown HS (Briar Cliff)) at No. 6 all won by 6-0, 6-1 scores.

Bungarden and Gunderson won at No.1 doubles 8-5 and the final winner of Zwiener and Kelli Johnson (Mankato, Minn./Mankato West HS) at No. 2 doubles 8-0.

In the afternoon, the Saints fell to Marian University 6-3. The Knights improved to 13-2 with the win and are ranked 19th in the NAIA National Coaches' Poll.

Megan Lawrence (Park Rapids, Minn./Park Rapids HS) and Alexa Herbst (Foley, Minn. /Foley HS) were the only doubles pair to win, taking the No. 2 spot 8-4. Lawrence also won at No. 4 singles 6-0, 6-0. Bungarden was the final winner for the Saints, coming back to win at the top singles flight 2-6, 6-4, (10-8).

The Saints (7-4) will face Saint Mary's College of Notre Dame (Ind.) tomorrow. That match is scheduled to begin at 7 a.m. local time.
