ORLANDO, Fla. (csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica women's tennis team won for the third straight time and recorded its fifth shutout of the season with a 9-0 victory over Central College (Iowa) to open its spring trip on Sunday.
In doubles action, it was the No. 1 team of
Hillary Bungarden (Hibbing, Minn./Hibbing HS) and
Alexis Gunderson (Virginia, Minn./Virginia HS) winning 8-6. The No. 2 team of
Kelli Johnson (Mankato, Minn./Mankato West HS) and
Rachael Zwiener (St. Cloud, Minn./Home School) won 8-3. Finally the No. 3 duo of
Megan Lawrence (Park Rapids, Minn./Park Rapids HS) and
Alexa Herbst (Foley, Minn. /Foley HS) won in a tiebreaker 9-8 (7-4).
The Saints won all six singles matches in straight sets. Bungarden won at the No. 1 spot 6-2, 6-1. Zwiener prevailed at the No. 2 spot 6-2, 7-6 (7-4). Gunderson won at No. 3 by scores of 6-3, 6-1.
Lawrence blanked her opponent at the No. 4 spot 6-0, 6-0. At No. 5, Johnson came out on top 7-5, 6-2. The final winner on the day was
Katie Kingston (Virginia, Minn./Virginia HS) at the No. 6 spot 6-1, 6-3.
For the Dutch its was their first match of the spring season after going 8-4 during the fall.
The Saints (6-3) will face both Saint Ambrose University (Iowa) and Marian University (Ind.) tomorrow. Both opponents are NAIA schools. The Saint Ambrose match is scheduled to begin at 10:30 a.m. (ET) and the Marian match at 3:30 p.m. (ET).
