DULUTH, Minn. (csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica women's tennis team lost its first match of the season Friday night to Bethel University 6-3 at the Arrowhead Tennis Center.

Doubles action began play and all three matches would be tight. Hillary Bungarden (Hibbing, Minn./Hibbing HS) and Alexis Gunderson (Virginia, Minn./Virginia HS) prevailed at the No. 1 spot 8-6. The No. 2 team of Rachael Zwiener (St. Cloud, Minn./Home School) and Alexa Herbst (Foley, Minn. /Foley HS) had their chances, but ultimately fell in a tiebreaker 9-8 (7-5). Bethel's No. 3 doubles team was able to break a 5-5 tie and win the final three games to win 8-5.

In singles, Bungarden was a straight sets winner at the No. 1 spot 6-1, 6-3. Also winning in straight sets was Megan Lawrence (Park Rapids, Minn./Park Rapids HS) at No. 4 by scores of 6-1, 6-2. The Royals would take the other four singles matches with two that could have gone either way. At both No. 2 and No. 6 singles, Bethel rallied from a set down to win a third set super-breaker 10-8 and 10-4, respectively.

The Saints (1-1) were scheduled to play Concordia College-Moorhead on Sunday, but that has been postponed due to the approaching winter storm. That match will be made up on Sunday, February 17th.
