DULUTH, Minn. (csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica women's tennis team was defeated twice by strong competition on Sunday, falling first to Augustana College (S.D.) 9-0 in the morning and then 7-2 to Gustavus Adolphus College in the afternoon.
The Saints began the day by squaring off with Division II's Augustana (S.D) in Virginia, Minn. this morning. The Vikings (9-0), who have made the NCAA Division II Tournament the past three seasons and were unbeaten entering today's contest, remained undefeated by winning 9-0. The Saints fell in straight sets in all six singles matches and managed to win just one game in the three doubles matches combined.
CSS then faced Division III regional power Gustavus Adolphus in the afternoon at the Arrowhead Tennis Center. The Saints took one of the three doubles matches as the No. 1 team of
Hillary Bungarden (Hibbing, Minn./Hibbing HS) and
Alexis Gunderson (Virginia, Minn./Virginia HS) won 8-5.
In singles play, four of the six matches could have gone either direction. The Saints won at the No. 3 spot as Gunderson rallied from a set down to win in a third set super-breaker 3-6, 7-6 (7-5), (10-5).
Kelli Johnson (Mankato, Minn./Mankato West HS) fell in a super-breaker at the No. 5 spot 6-3, 4-6, (12-10). Both
Rachael Zwiener (St. Cloud, Minn./Home School) at No. 2 and
Megan Lawrence (Park Rapids, Minn./Park Rapids HS) at No. 4 were on the wrong end of tie-breakers in their matches and fell in straight sets. The Gusties (2-0) are ranked No. 6 regionally by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA).
The Saints (3-3) will travel to southern Wisconsin next weekend to take on Concordia University (Wis.) on Friday and Edgewood College (Wis.) on Saturday.
