Box Score DULUTH, Minn. (csssaints.com) – After a
Mariah Hovick (Prior Lake, Minn./Prior Lake HS) 3-pointer with 6.2 seconds left in regulation to tie the game up 74-74 and to force overtime, the St. Scholastica women's basketball team was unable to find the basket in the extra frame, being outscored 16-3 en route to a tough 90-77 loss to Northwestern College in Saturday's Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) matchup in the Reif Gymnasium. It was the final contest of the regular season for both teams as well as Senior Day for the Saints.
The opening half saw Northwestern grab a quick 11-6 lead in the first three minutes of action. The Eagles would lead by as much as nine points throughout the remainder of the half but the Saints kept it close only to trail 40-35 heading into the break.
CSS would open the half on a 9-0 run to take the lead 41-40 off of a
Danica Schellbach (Rush City, Minn./Rush City HS) free throw. The Eagles would then retake the lead moments later and extend it to eight points, 56-48, with 12:54 remaining.
The Saints would reclaim the lead at the 6:19 mark, 65-64, off of a free throw by
Erin Frase (Phillips, Wis./Phillips HS (UW-River Falls)). The teams would trade the lead for the next two minutes until the Eagles would lead by three points with 13 seconds remaining in regulation. Hovick would come off of a screen and bury a 3-pointer from the left wing to send the game into overtime after a Northwestern desperation shot did not fall.
In the extra frame, the Saints had a tough time finding the basket and were outscored 16-3 as Northwestern would pull away making several free throws down the stretch to defeat the Saints 90-77.
Northwestern (16-9, 11-3 UMAC) was led by Jessica Fife with 26 points and 14 boards. Mollie Sir added 25 points while Chanel Madson dropped 20 points for the Eagles.
The Eagles finished the game shooting 48-percent from the field, 39-percent from beyond the arc, and 70-percent from the free throw line. Northwestern held a 30-10 advantage on points off of turnovers. The Eagles committed 14 turnovers on the night.
CSS was led by Frase with 19 points and eight boards. Schellbach chipped in 16 points and grabbed eight boards while Hovick added 10 points and garnered eight boards of her own.
Holly Peterson (Mantorville, Minn./Kasson-Mantorville HS) added 10 points off of the bench for the Saints.
The Saints finished the game shooting 42-percent from the field, 32-percent from beyond the arc, and 52-percent from the free throw line. CSS held a 44-41 rebounding advantage, a 15-9 second chance point's advantage, and a 19-11 bench point's advantage. The Saints did commit 20 turnovers on the night.
St. Scholastica (11-14, 8-6 UMAC) did qualify for the UMAC Postseason Tournament as the No. 4 seed despite the loss and will face No. 1 seed Minnesota Morris. That game is scheduled to start at 7 p.m. Wednesday night in Morris. Tune into csssaints.com for updates from the game.
