Saints Unable to Hang on to Early Lead

| By:
Box Score SUPERIOR, Wis. (csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica women's basketball team had an early 16-point lead, but the University of Wisconsin-Superior came back and overtook the Saints early in the second half to win 75-63 on Tuesday at the Mertz Mortorelli Gymnasium.

The Saints got out to a fast start, scoring the first seven points and going up 15-2 at the first media timeout. CSS led by as many as 16 before the Yellowjackets started to chip away at the advantage.

UWS went on a 10-2 run to cut it to 20-12 midway through the half. The Jackets then got it down to five with eight minutes to go before the Saints climbed the lead back to 10 thanks to five straight points by Elena Huber (Northfield, Minn./Northfield HS).

CSS led by 10 with two minutes go before the Jackets closed the half on an 8-1 run to make the halftime score 37-34 St. Scholastica.

The Saints shot 59 percent from the floor in the half, while UWS was only 21 percent. However, the Yellowjackets were 14-for-18 from the free throw line, while the Saints were just 2-of-7. CSS committed 11 turnovers to only three for UWS. Superior also outscored the Saints 10-2 in second-chance points. CSS's Erin Frase (Phillips, Wis./Phillips HS (UW-River Falls)) and UWS's Sally Linzmeier each had 10 points at the half.

The Yellowjackets began the second half on a 6-0 run to take a 40-37, their first lead of the game. Including the end of the first half, UWS went on a 14-1 run.

The Jackets would not relinquish the lead the rest of the way. A 6-0 run by St. Scholastica midway through the half got the Saints within two at 56-54. However, Superior responded with a 6-0 run of its own and made its free throws down the stretch to win 75-63.

The final score is only one point off from when the teams played earlier this season at the Reif Gymnasium. UWS won that game 74-63.

The Saints shot only 23 percent in the second half to finish at 42 percent for the game, while the Yellowjackets were at 31 percent for the game. UWS was 24-for-29 from the charity stripe, compared to 12-of-19 for the Saints. CSS also committed 16 turnovers, while UWS only had seven giveaways.

Offensive rebounds and second-chance points were another big difference in deciding the outcome. UWS out-rebounded the Saints 56-37, including 24-5 on the offensive glass. That led to a 20-4 advantage in second-chance points for the Yellowjackets.

Frase led the Saints with 14 points. Kelsey Sorenson-Giffrow (Braham, Minn./Braham HS (Minn. Duluth)) added 13 points and was 3-for-5 on 3-point attempts. Mariah Hovick (Prior Lake, Minn./Prior Lake HS) led the team with seven rebounds. Linzmeier and Brynn Liljander each had 18 points to pace the Jackets (6-4).

The Saints (4-6) will play their final non-conference game of the regular season on Saturday when they travel to Hancock, Mich. to face Finlandia University. Tip time is scheduled for 2 p.m. Eastern time.
