Win Streak Ends as Saints Fall to Auggies

Box Score MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – The St. Scholastica women's basketball team took a three-game win streak into Saturday's contest against the Augsburg Auggies, but the Auggies were too much down the stretch forcing 32 total turnovers in the game while going on an 12-1 run in the latter stages of the second half en route to a 62-48 win over the Saints.

The Saints opened the first half on a 9-4 run after Kelsey Sorenson-Giffrow (Braham, Minn./Braham HS (Minn. Duluth)) hit a three pointer at the 15:16 mark.  Augsburg would retake the lead a few minutes later and extend the lead to six, 15-9, with ten minutes to play in the half.

Despite shooting 39-percent from the field in the first half and 50-percent from beyond the arc, the Saints trailed by just two points, 25-23, heading into the break.  The Auggies finished the half shooting 29-percent from the field. 

The second half saw the Auggies extend the lead to as much as ten points before the Saints made a 10-0 to tie the game with 7:11 left.  The Saints were unable to capture the lead and the Auggies were too strong down the stretch and snapped the three-game win streak for the Saints winning 62-48.

Augsburg (3-3) was led by Marie Fitzgerald with 13 points while Abbey Luger and Jill Tichy chipped in 12 points.  The Auggies finished the game shooting 41-percent from the field, 37-percent from beyond the arc, and just 58-percent from the free throw line. 

Augsburg would commit 22 turnovers, but held a 27-9 advantage in points off turnovers.

The Saints were led by Mariah Hovick (Prior Lake, Minn./Prior Lake HS) who led all scorers with 16 points.  Sorenson-Giffrow and Erin Frase (Phillips, Wis./Phillips HS (UW-River Falls)) added eight points apiece for the Saints who finished the game shooting 34-percent from the field, 44-percent from beyond the arc, and 72-percent from the charity stripe.

The big stat for the game was the 32 turnovers committed by the Saints.  CSS averaged 18 turnovers heading into the contest. 

St. Scholastica (3-5) will look to get back in the win column as they travel to UW-River Falls on Sunday December 29th.  Tip is scheduled for 3 p.m.  Tune into csssaints.com for updates from this game.
