Saints Pickup First Win

Box Score MENOMONIE, Wis. (csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica woman's basketball team took home a deserved win against Dakota State University (S.D.) 72-62 at the Super 8 Turkey Shootout late Saturday afternoon. 

The game was an even climb throughout the first half with neither team breaking away by more than nine points at a time. The lead changed four times throughout the half was tied three times. Dakota State ended the first half ahead 30-29 over the Saints.

The Saints were 20-for-23 on free throws to stay with the Lady T's. Mariah Hovick (Prior Lake, Minn./Prior Lake HS) led the Saints in the first half with 9-for-10 free throws and a total of 13 points. Kelsey Sorenson-Giffrow (Braham, Minn./Braham HS (Minn. Duluth)) followed right behind her at 12 points with 2-for-3 outside the arc.

The second half started with much of the same as both teams battle to get ahead.  The Saints started to dominate the game at the 14:11 marker with an 11-0 run with six of those points coming from Hovick. 

Dakota State fought back in the final minutes with 10 points and six fouls in the last three minutes of the game. Solid free throw shooting and baskets in the paint kept the Saints ahead through the end of the second half.

Sorenson led both teams with a total of 17 points to end the game with nine of those points being outside the 3-point line. Close behind her with 15 points for the Saints was Hovick who took home nine of those points from the charity strip.  The Saints ended the game with an excellent 3-point percentage of 50 percent.

BreeAna Olson led Dakota State with 13 points and close behind her was Kylie Westover with 12 points. 

The Saints (1-4) will continue playing in the Super 8 Turkey Opener tomorrow against the host University of Wisconsin-Stout.  The game is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m. in Johnson Fieldhouse.
