Box Score DULUTH, Minn. (csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica women's basketball team fell to Bridge Rival University of Wisconsin-Superior in its home opener Monday night 74-63, despite 16 points from
Kayla Swanson (Hibbing, Minn./Hibbing HS) 11 points from
Caitlin McKernon (Coon Rapids, Minn./Fridley HS).
With the Saints down by just one point after a
Sammy Doucette (Colfax, Wis./Colfax HS (UW-River Falls)) 3-pointer with 13:56 to go in the first half, Superior would go on a 17-3 run led by Sally Linzmeier who had 10 points on the run and would finish with 23 points and nine boards on the night for the Yellowjackets.
The score at that point was 28-13 Superior with just 4:06 left to play in the half. However, the Saints would end the half on a 7-2 run of their own highlighted by a Swanson 3-pointer followed by two layups with one by Swanson and the other by
Kariana DeYoung (Deer River, Minn./Deer River HS) with just 10 seconds left in the half to bring the score 34-24 at halftime.
After halftime, the Saints would cut the Yellowjacket lead to just eight points with 16:19 to go on a Swanson 3-point-play to keep the Saints in the game.
Superior would build the lead back up to 15 points with 11:33 to go in the game, but again the Saints came back cutting the lead again to eight points on another Swanson layup bringing the score to 52-44 Superior with 10:32 to go in the game.
That's all the closer the Saints could get, however, as Superior maintained a double digit lead for the remainder of the game until the final buzzer sounded with the Saints falling to the Yellowjackets 74-63.
It was a big game for the Saints off the bench outscoring Superior 37-16 in that category. The Yellowjackets would make up for it, however, with a domination presence inside outscoring the St. Scholastica 40-24 in that paint.
The Saints (0-4) will be in action this weekend at the Quality Inn & Suites Turkey Shootout tournament in Menomonie, Wisconsin when they play a pair of games first against Dakota State on Saturday at 4 p.m. and then on Sunday against UW-Stout at 2 p.m.
