Box Score DULUTH, Minn. (csssaints.com) – The 10th-ranked St. Scholastica men's hockey team suffered its first defeat this season, falling to Bridge Rival University of Wisconsin-Superior 3-2 Saturday night at Mars Lakeview Arena.
It was Military Appreciation Night at Mars and the Saints were wearing special camo jerseys to commemorate the event.
The Saints got the scoring started with a
Josh Hansen (Chilliwack, British Columbia/Unity Christian School (Chilliwack-BCHL) ) goal from
Brandon Nowakowski (Calgary, Alberta/Central Memorial HS (Calgary Royals-AJHL)) with eight minutes to go in the first period. For Hansen, it was his first collegiate goal.
UWS responded 26 seconds later on a Tanner Dion slap shot. The flurry of goals continued as the Saints regained the lead 12 seconds later on a
Keegan Bruce (Bellingham, Wash./Bellingham HS (Weyburn-SJHL) ) power-play goal.
Derek Hills (Campbell River, British Columbia/Timberline Secondary (Bowling Green State) ) and
Alex Valenti (Blaine, Wash./Bellingham HS (Merritt-BCHL) ) had the assists. The Saints led 2-1 at the first intermission, but were out-shot 9-3 in the period.
The Yellowjackets tied the contest five minutes and 25 seconds into the second period when Pat Dalbec scored on a breakaway. Then with 7:08 left in the second, Superior had an extra attacker on the ice because of a delayed penalty and took the lead on a Brad Phenow goal.
That ultimately was the game-winner as the Saints out-shot the Jackets in the third, 8-6, but could not get a quality chance on net as the Yellowjackets prevailed 3-2. The Saints have not beaten UWS in a regular season game at Mars since December 12, 2009 and are now 0-4-1 since that point.
Colin Rundell (Tees, Alberta/Lacombe Composite (Alaska-Fairbanks) ) had 25 saves in the loss for the Saints. Drew Strandberg had 16 saves in the victory for the Yellowjackets (3-4-0). UWS out-shot the Saints for the game 28-18.
The Saints (5-1-2) will have just one game over Thanksgiving weekend as they take on conference foe St. Norbert College in a non-conference game in Wausau, Wis. next Saturday. The game is being dubbed "College Hockey Night" and is sponsored by the Marathon County Youth Hockey Association. All proceeds from the game will be directed to MCYHA's fund for improving the rink at Marathon Park. Listen to the game live on Saints Sports Net.
