DULUTH, Minn. (csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica women's basketball team will open its 2013-14 season on Friday night when it faces Macalester College at 6 p.m. in the Quinlivan & Hughes Tip-Off Tournament, hosted by the College of Saint Benedict.

St. Scholastica Saints
2012-13 Record: 13-15 (8-6 UMAC)

-The Saints are coming off their first NCAA Tournament appearance last season. As the No. 4 seed, CSS captured its second UMAC Tournament title in program history and the conference's automatic qualifier.
-The Saints would fall to Cornell College (Iowa) 76-54 in the first round of the tournament.
-CSS returns four starters from last year's squad. However, the Saints did lose sophomore
Holly Peterson (Mantorville, Minn./Kasson-Mantorville HS) to a season-ending injury during a preseason scrimmage.
-Returning for the Saints is First Team All-UMAC selection
Erin Frase (Phillips, Wis./Phillips HS (UW-River Falls)). Frase led the Saints in scoring, averaging 13.4 points per game last season. She shot 54.6 percent from the floor, which ranked 13th in the nation and set a program record for best field goal percentage in a season.
-Sophomore
Danica Schellbach (Rush City, Minn./Rush City HS) is also back. Schellbach averaged 17.8 points per game in the final seven games, including 24 points and 14 rebounds in the UMAC Tournament Championship win at Martin Luther.
-Former UMAC Freshman of the Year and 2013 honorable mention selection, junior guard
Mariah Hovick (Prior Lake, Minn./Prior Lake HS) returns to the backcourt. Hovick poured in a career-high 25 points in the UMAC Tournament semifinal upset over Minnesota Morris and finished second on the team with 10.5 points per game.
-Guards
Sammy Doucette (Colfax, Wis./Colfax HS (UW-River Falls)) and
Elena Huber (Northfield, Minn./Northfield HS) return. Both averaged around 20 minutes per game last season. Huber finished second on the team in 3-pointers made (28) and percentage (.322).
-Top newcomers for the Saints include Minnesota-Duluth sophomore transfer
Kelsey Sorenson-Giffrow (Braham, Minn./Braham HS (Minn. Duluth)), who scored over 1,400 career points at Braham High School.
-Freshman
Kayla Swanson (Hibbing, Minn./Hibbing HS) from Hibbing High School, who averaged 20.5 points per game her senior year. Fellow freshman
Chelsea Schull (St. Clair, Minn./St. Clair HS) was a two-time first team all-conference selection at St. Clair High School.
-The Saints have been picked to win the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC), according to the preseason coaches' poll.

Macalester College Scots
2012-13 Record: 4-21 (3-19 MIAC)

-The Scots placed 11th in the 12-team MIAC last season.
-After starting last season 4-4, the Scots dropped their last 17 consecutive games.
-Macalester will have to replace senior guard Kyanna Jones, who was an honorable mention All-MIAC choice last season.
-Seven seniors make up this year's squad. Senior center Veronika Jakubovie is the team's leading returning scorer as she averaged 8.7 points per game a season ago.

-The Saints last played the Scots in 2005 in Stevens Point, Wis. and won 74-25.

College of Saint Benedict Blazers
2012-13 Record: 20-7 (17-5 MIAC)

-The Blazers placed fourth in the MIAC last season and fell to regular season champion Concordia College-Moorhead in the MIAC Tournament Semifinals.
-St. Ben's lost three seniors that averaged 62.3 minutes, 23.3 points and 12.8 rebounds per game.
-The Blazers will be led by senior Brianna Barrett, who was an All-MIAC selection last season. Barrett led the Blazers in scoring, and ranked third in the conference.
-Morgan Dale is also back after earning honorable mention All-MIAC accolades a season ago.
