PREVIEW: Men's Basketball Starts Season Saturday

DULUTH, Minn. (csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica men's basketball team opens its 2013-14 campaign Saturday in the St. Cloud State University Tournament against NAIA's Mayville State University (N.D.) at 2 p.m.

Game Times:
Saturday vs. Mayville State – 2 p.m.
Sunday vs. Saint John's – 4 p.m.

St. Scholastica Saints
2012-13 Record:
 9-16 (7-7 UMAC)
Head Coach: David Staniger
-The Saints missed the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) Tournament for the second time in the last three seasons in 2013.
-CSS also lost seniors Brett Tester (Andover, Minn./Andover HS), Jonah Dahlman (Braham, Minn./Braham HS) and MarShaan Johnson (Minneapolis, Minn./Minneapolis North HS (Minneapolis Comm. & Tech. College)).
-Tester, who is now an assistant coach, reached numerous milestones during his senior season. He became just the third player to record over 1,500 career points (1,504) in program history and just the second player to score 1,500 points and grab over 600 rebounds (646).
-The Saints have only senior on this year's squad and that is captain Steve Golobich (Mountain Iron, Minn./Mountain Iron-Buhl HS (Mesabi Range CC)). CSS also only has one junior on the team and that is Saint Mary's transfer LaMonte Hall (Minneapolis, Minn./DeLaSalle HS (Saint Mary’s)).
-The rest of the squad is made up of freshmen and sophomores.
-The sophomore class saw plenty of playing time last season. Trevor Morlock (Rogers, Minn./Rogers HS (Minn., Crookston)), who transferred in mid-year, finished second on the team in scoring as a freshman at 11.9 points per game. He also grabbed a team-high 6.7 rebounds per game.
-Tyler Rosenberger (Forest Lake, Minn./Forest Lake HS) and Jake Naslund (Barnum, Minn./Barnum HS) saw a lot of time at the guard positions with Rosenberger making 46 percent of his 3-point attempts.
-Sophomore big man Mike Spoden (Grand Rapids, Minn./Grand Rapids HS) was named a captain by his teammates after just one season, showing his leadership attributes. Spoden averaged nine minutes per game last season, playing behind seniors Tester and  Johnson.
-Andrew Laughlin (Duluth, Minn./Duluth Central HS) came on late in the season and Nathan Carlson (Alvarado, Minn./East Grand Forks HS) missed all of last season due to injury.
-The addition of Hall and freshman Julius Johnson (Minneapolis, Minn./Henry Sibley HS) adds some quickness to the backcourt for the Saints, who will look to play up tempo this season and press at every opportunity.
-Former Rush City High School big man Garret Pearson (Rush City, Minn./Rush City HS) will add some depth to the post.
-The Saints have been picked to finish fourth in the UMAC this season, according to the preseason coaches' poll.

Mayville State University Comets
2012-13 Record: 10-17
Head Coach: Dan DeWitt
-The Comets have played four games already this season and play Division IIs Bemidji State tonight in Bemidji.
-Mayville State defeated Canadian Mennonite 100-64 and Crossroads College 99-78 in their own tournament in October.
-The Comets fell to Division II's Moorhead State 84-51 and Concordia-St. Paul 73-62.
-The Comets have 14 new faces on the squad.
-Charlton Wilson has averaged 17 points and David Olson 14 points per game in two games this season.
-Michael Lindsay is averaging 8.5 rebounds per contest.
Series History: (CSS is 0-2 vs. Mayville State)
The Saints last played Mayville State in 2000, falling 92-65.


Saint John's University Johnnies
2012-13 Record: 12-14 (11-9 MIAC)
Head Coach: Jim Smith
-The Johnnies fell to Concordia-St. Paul in an exhibition game 85-71 last Thursday.
-After starting last season 3-10, the Johnnies won seven straight games and nine of their final 12 games, good for a sixth-place tie in the league standings.
-Saint John's returns eight of its top nine scorers from last season, although first-team All-MIAC selection Seth Marx will miss the first month of the season with a knee injury.
-Senior Kevin McKenzie returns at point guard. McKenzie led the team with 73 assists last season.
-Forward Mitchell Kuck averaged 11.6 points per game last season and was named to the All-MIAC Rookie Team.
-Senior Jack Wittenborg led the Johnnies in scoring with 14 points against Concordia-St. Paul.

The Saints fell to the Johnnies 69-67 in 2011 at the St. Cloud Tournament.
