Box Score DULUTH, Minn. (csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica men's soccer team had their ten game winning streak snapped Tuesday night at Ordean Stadium as the Saints and YellowJackets of UW-Superior settled for a 1-1 tie.
The first half was a back and forth battle, as the Saints had just six shots, while UW-Superior had only seven. However, Brian Chapman beat keeper
Adam Hewitt (Richmond Hill, Ontario/St. Theresa of Lisieux Catholic HS) off of a corner kick in the 25th minute to give the 'Jackets a 1-0 advantage. Brian Grand and Alberto Rivero-Garcia were credited with assists. The Chapman goal would be the lone goal of the half, as both teams struggled to generate offensive attacks.
The second half was much like the first, with UW-Superior outshooting the Saints 8-7. However, it was CSS who struck with a goal as
Sean Morgan (Belfast, Ireland/St. Patrick’s Grammar School) buried the breakaway attempt with a chip over the goaltender and into the net to tie the game at 1-1. St. Scholastica and UW-Superior continued to battle for the remainder of regulation, but the score remained 1-1 after 90 minutes.
The first overtime saw two shots from both teams, but neither team was able to find the back of the net. The second overtime was much of the same, although the Saints had an opportunity on a corner kick in the second overtime, but was unable to convert.
Andrew Jenkins (Cardiff, Wales/Whitchurch HS) and 'Jackets keeper Matt Elder both received yellow cards late in the second overtime, but the hard fought border battle would end knotted up at 1-1.
CSS keeper
Adam Hewitt (Richmond Hill, Ontario/St. Theresa of Lisieux Catholic HS) made five saves in the contest, and Matt Elder saved six shots for UW-Superior. The tie brings the Saints to an 11-2-3 record, and UW-Superior to an 8-6-3 record.
St. Scholastica looks to build a new winning streak this weekend at home as CSS hosts UMAC rivals UM-Morris on Friday and Crown College comes to town on Saturday. The Saints remain a perfect 10-0 in UMAC play this season.
