Joe Watt (London, England/North West Kent College) converted a penalty kick goal in the 79th minute to give the St. Scholastica men's soccer team a 1-0 victory on Saturday over Macalester College in the Advantage Emblem Cup.
The Saints put the pressure on the Scots early with a couple of shots towards the net and a couple of corner kicks in the first 12 minutes, but the contest remained scoreless. Macalester would outshoot the Saints 5-3 in the first 45 minutes as the teams went into halftime scoreless.
In the second half, the game remained scoreless for the first 30 minutes until the Scots were called for a foul in CSS's box which led to a
Joe Watt (London, England/North West Kent College) penalty kick. Watt put the ball in the net to the right of the 'keeper to give the Saints the lead.
The Scots had chances late, but
Adam Hewitt (Richmond Hill, Ontario/St. Theresa of Lisieux Catholic HS) picked up the shutout, making four saves on the day as the Saints won 1-0.
Of note, the game was delayed in the second half approximately 30 minutes due to an injury involving a Macalester player. The player was able to walk off under his own power.
The Saints were outshot 8-6 in the contest and each team recorded five corner kicks. With just one more game remaining on the men's side of the Advantage Emblem Cup, the Saints sit tied for second with the University of Wisconsin-Superior with eight points.
The Yellowjackets will play Concordia College-Moorhead tomorrow in Superior to wrap up the tournament. UW-Whitewater is currently leading with 18 points.
Caleb Yurek (Northfield, Minn./Northfield HS) and
Tom Corcoran (Warrington, England/Great Sankey HS, Priestley College) were named to the all-tournament team for the Saints. Macalester falls to 0-2-0 on the year.
The Saints (1-1-0) will travel to Moorhead next weekend where they will take part in the Cobber Invitational, hosted by Concordia College-Moorhead. The Saints open with the host Cobbers at 4 p.m. on Friday.
