Women’s Tennis Moves on to UMAC Title Match

MINNEAPOLIS – The St. Scholastica women's tennis team defeated Martin Luther College Friday evening 8-1 in the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) Women's Tennis Tournament semifinals at the Baseline Tennis Center.

The only loss for the Saints came at the No. 3 spot were Alexis Gunderson (Virginia, Minn./Virginia HS) was forced to default due to illness. In other singles action, Hillary Bungarden (Hibbing, Minn./Hibbing HS) won at the No. 1 spot 6-0, 6-0. At No. 2, Rachael Zwiener (St. Cloud, Minn./Home School) won 6-2, 6-3. Megan Lawrence (Park Rapids, Minn./Park Rapids HS) blanked her opponent at No. 4 for her 13th straight singles win. Pamela Hartley (Lima, Peru/Franklin Roosevelt College) won at No. 5 by scores of 7-5, 6-1 and at No. 6 Kelsey Geiger (Champlin, Minn./Champlin Park HS) won 6-2, 6-4.

In doubles, the No. 1 team of Bungarden and Zwiener won 8-2. Gunderson was able to make it through doubles with partner Allie Carlson (Aitkin, Minn./Aitkin HS) and hung on for a 9-8 (7-5) victory. The final winners were the No. 3 team of Kelli Johnson (Mankato, Minn./Mankato West HS) and Jill Kammerer (St. Paul, Minn./Henry Sibley HS) by an 8-1 score.

The Saints (17-6) move on to face the winner of the Northwestern College and University of Minnesota Morris in the championship. The title match is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m.
