Women’s Tennis Notches 100th Consecutive UMAC Win

DULUTH, Minn. – The St. Scholastica women's tennis team won its 100th consecutive Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) dual match on Sunday with a 9-0 victory over the University of Minnesota Morris.

In doubles play, the No. 1 team of Hillary Bungarden (Hibbing, Minn./Hibbing HS) and Rachael Zwiener (St. Cloud, Minn./Home School) won 8-1. The No.2 team of Alexis Gunderson (Virginia, Minn./Virginia HS) and Allie Carlson (Aitkin, Minn./Aitkin HS) won 8-3. Finally, the No. 3 duo of Jill Kammerer (St. Paul, Minn./Henry Sibley HS) and Cortne Solberg (Bemidji, Minn./Bemidji HS) came out on top 8-1.

It was all straight set victories in singles action. Bungarden won at the No. 1 spot 6-2, 6-4. Zwiener dropped just one game at the No. 2 spot, 6-1, 6-0. At No. 3, Gunderson dropped two games in a 6-2, 6-0 triumph.

Kelli Johnson (Mankato, Minn./Mankato West HS) won at the No. 4 spot 6-3, 6-2 and Megan Lawrence (Park Rapids, Minn./Park Rapids HS) won her 11th straight singles match by scores of 6-1, 6-1 at No. 5. The final winner on the day was Aleksandra Ochrymowicz (Winnipeg, Manitoba/St. Mary’s Academy) at No. 6 as she shut out her opponent 6-0, 6-0. The Cougars fall to 3-5 overall and 2-4 in the conference.

The Saints (15-6, 9-0 UMAC) will close out their regular season at home next Saturday when they do battle with Northwestern College for the regular season championship. The match is scheduled to begin at noon at Central High School or at an indoor facility.
