FRIDLEY, Minn. – In a battle of conference unbeatens, the St. Scholastica women's tennis team defeated Northwestern College 6-3 on Tuesday night at the Lifetime Fitness in Fridley.

The match was a make-up from March 29 when the teams were scheduled to play at the Baseline Tennis Center, but rain washed it out.

The Eagles took an early lead, winning two of the three doubles matches. The lone CSS team to win was the No. 3 tandem of Kelli Johnson (Mankato, Minn./Mankato West HS) and Megan Lawrence (Park Rapids, Minn./Park Rapids HS), who won 8-1. The two doubles losses for the Saints are the first in conference play since the 2007 season. Until today, CSS had won 141 consecutive conference doubles matches.

The Saints bounced back in singles action, winning the bottom five flights. Rachael Zwiener (St. Cloud, Minn./Home School) won at No. 2 by scores of 6-2, 6-3. Alexis Gunderson (Virginia, Minn./Virginia HS) won at No. 3 by scores of 6-3, 6-4. Cortne Solberg (Bemidji, Minn./Bemidji HS) needed a third set super-breaker to come out on top at the No. 4 spot 6-3, 3-6, (10-1).

Megan Lawrence (Park Rapids, Minn./Park Rapids HS) won her 10th straight singles match at the No. 5 spot 6-2, 6-4. Finally, Aleksandra Ochrymowicz (Winnipeg, Manitoba/St. Mary’s Academy) was victorious at the No. 6 spot 6-1, 6-1. The Eagles fall to 8-9 overall and 5-1 in the conference.

The Saints (13-6, 7-0 UMAC) will be back at home on Saturday when they host Martin Luther College at Duluth's Central High School (weather pending). Action is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m.
