Women’s Tennis Takes Down Cougars

MORRIS, Minn. – The St. Scholastica women's tennis team handed the University of Minnesota-Morris a 7-2 defeat on Sunday in an Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) dual match.

The Saints won all three doubles matches with the No. 1 team of Hillary Bungarden (Hibbing, Minn./Hibbing HS) and Rachael Zwiener (St. Cloud, Minn./Home School) winning 8-4. The No. 2 tandem of Alexis Gunderson (Virginia, Minn./Virginia HS) and Allie Carlson (Aitkin, Minn./Aitkin HS) were also victorious 8-4. Jill Kammerer (St. Paul, Minn./Henry Sibley HS) and Kelli Johnson (Mankato, Minn./Mankato West HS) won at the No. 3 spot 8-1.

Zwiener at No. 2, Gunderson at No. 3 and Carlson at No. 6 all cruised to straight set victories in singles play. Bungarden was forced to a third set super-breaker where she would prevail 6-4, 6-7 (5-7), (10-6).

The Cougars won matches at No. 4 and 5 singles becoming the first conference team to take multiple matches off the Saints in the same dual match since the 2008 season. Morris falls to 0-3 overall (0-1 UMAC).

The Saints (10-5, 4-0 UMAC) will be off next week and will be in action next on Friday, April 13th when they are back in Duluth for the first time since mid-February to take on the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire in a non-conference dual match.
