NEW ULM, Minn. – The St. Scholastica women's tennis team took down Martin Luther College 8-1 on Saturday in an Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) dual match.
The Saints won all three doubles matches on the day. The No. 1 team of
Hillary Bungarden (Hibbing, Minn./Hibbing HS) and
Rachael Zwiener (St. Cloud, Minn./Home School) won 8-5. At No. 2,
Alexis Gunderson (Virginia, Minn./Virginia HS) and
Allie Carlson (Aitkin, Minn./Aitkin HS) also won 8-5. The No. 3 duo of
Jill Kammerer (St. Paul, Minn./Henry Sibley HS) and
Kelli Johnson (Mankato, Minn./Mankato West HS) won 8-3.
Bungarden and Zwiener also won at No. 1 and No. 2 singles, respectively, with Bungarden coming out on top 6-0, 6-1 and Zwiener the opposite 6-1, 6-0.
Kelsey Geiger (Champlin, Minn./Champlin Park HS) at No. 4 and Carlson at No. 6 won in straight sets with Geiger winning 6-2, 6-1 and Carlson blanking her opponent 6-0, 6-0. Gunderson rallied from a set down to win in a super-breaker at the No. 3 spot 3-6, 6-0, (10-8).
The Knights did take a match from the Saints at No. 5 singles. Last season, Martin Luther was the only UMAC team to win a match against CSS. The Knights fall to 0-4 this season. St. Scholastica extends its conference winning streak to 94 dual matches.
The Saints (9-5, 3-0 UMAC) will face the University of Minnesota-Morris tomorrow morning at 9 a.m.
