MILWAUKEE – The St. Scholastica women's tennis team swept Concordia University-Wisconsin 9-0 on Friday night at the Paley Tennis Center in the first-ever meeting between the two programs.
The Falcons (10-2) were the co-regular season champions of the Northern Athletics Conference (NAC) in the fall. Friday night's match was the first of the spring for Concordia.
The No. 1 doubles team of
Hillary Bungarden (Hibbing, Minn./Hibbing HS) and
Kelli Johnson (Mankato, Minn./Mankato West HS) won 8-5. The No. 2 team of
Rachael Zwiener (St. Cloud, Minn./Home School) and
Cortne Solberg (Bemidji, Minn./Bemidji HS) won 8-3. The No. 3 duo of
Allie Carlson (Aitkin, Minn./Aitkin HS) and
Alexis Gunderson (Virginia, Minn./Virginia HS) were victorious 8-2.
In singles play, Bungarden shut out her opponent at the No. 1 spot 6-0, 6-0. At No. 2, Zwiener won in a third set super-breaker 6-3, 4-6, (12-10). Gunderson came out on top at No. 3 by scores of 6-3, 6-2.
At No. 4, Solberg won 6-0, 6-2, at No. 5
Aleksandra Ochrymowicz (Winnipeg, Manitoba/St. Mary’s Academy) won 6-1, 6-2 and the final winner on the day at No. 6 was
Megan Lawrence (Park Rapids, Minn./Park Rapids HS) by scores of 6-3, 6-0.
The Saints (3-2) will face Edgewood College (Wis.) Saturday evening at Nielsen Tennis Stadium on the campus of the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Action is set to begin at 6:15 p.m.
